There’s a tough to find model I’d like to get my wife as a Xmas gift but I don’t want to take any chances. If I find one I want to grab it.

Can I get applecare after the fact? How long after? And would I have to open the package for a SN or whatever?

EDIT: This page explains it all better, near the bottom. Outlined below. https://www.apple.com/support/products/watch.html

Purchase AppleCare+ with your new Apple Watch. Or buy it within 60 days of your Apple Watch purchase:

  • Online (requires you to verify your serial number and run a remote diagnostic)
  • Visit an Apple Store (inspection of Apple Watch and proof of purchase are required)
  • Or call (800) 275-2273 (requires you to run a remote diagnostic and provide proof of purchase)

Also, thanks for reminding me... I need to get it on my wife's new Watch.

Just buy applecare on the same order with the watch. It automatically enrolls it. No need to open the box etc.

Two problems with this:
-the clock starts ticking on the applecare when you buy it, no?
-I may have to buy it from hermes if they get it in first, and they don’t offer it with sale

No the AppleCare timer starts at the purchase date of the watch not when you buy AppleCare.

Not sure about buying direct from Hermès. Likely not an option. My S4 Hermès has the serial on the box though so you are all set.

If you pay for AC+ in full, up front, you will get a refund for the unused portion if you return the watch if your wife doesn't like it (as long as you've made no claims on it - which in your case wouldn't happen).

Nice gift, by the way! I hope she likes it, but I understand why you'd want to make sure it was returnable.

Oh - also, remember that some time in November Apple starts its holiday return period extension. I am pretty sure that usually starts before Thanksgiving and it runs until early January. It's not a set starting date. Apple announces it every year, for that holiday season.

If you check your account status on Apple support app and click check coverage it will show if you have Apple care and how many days you have left to buy it. It also has a link to purchase

I subscribed to T-Mobile’s damage theft service when I bought my watch a few days ago but it hasn’t updated yet I guess

60 days. Interesting.

I called last week to cancel AC+ on my series 3 (that I traded-in after a year) and I'm sure the agent said I had up to 90 days to add AC+ to my new s4.

Maybe I misheard? Or maybe it's 60 days in print, and an additional 30 days at their discretion? Who knows?
