Thinking of getting base model $999 2020 M1 MBA as i dont need more power than that. But with Apple even coming around the corner in September, and another in october usually, do you think they will refresh the base model 13 inch MBA to M2 soon? or do you think they will get rid of the old design and only have the 14 inch notch design going forward? if so, then ill get the 13 inch MBA now, since i really want the 13 inch design, not the 14 inch square one.

im confused, they have a base 13" m2 air already. That's what replaced the m1 air.

nope. i just looked at the store. 13 is still M1, M2 is the new 14 inch design. im talking about me wanting to get the 13 inch old design
the m2 is 13.6' due to have smaller bezels but its actually almost identical in size but thinner and lighter. the 14' is the thicker and heavier m1 pro.

They will not put an m2 into the old design air. The only one due for a refresh is the 13" m2 pro model thats still in the old case

M2 air: 11.97 x 8.46 x 0.44 in 2.7 lbs
M1 air: 11.97 × 8.36 × 0.63 in 2.8 lbs

So, if you're not a fan of the m2 air design then feel free too get the M1 air instead. But I personally recommend the m2 air, faster, lighter, nicer design, better and brighter screen etc. Though I would wait on a sale for the m1, many times goes down to $899

You're confusing different models. The M2 Air is 13 inch just like the M1 Air. Apple will not be updating the M1 Air body with an M2 chip, that old body style is dead. If you put the M2 and M1 MacBook Air on top of each other they're the same length and width.

There's a MacBook Pro 14 inch but it's much thicker.

Definitely confusing it if hes saying he looked at the website and says its listed as 14". Nowhere on apples site do they call the air a 14" device

13" M1 MacBook Air base price $999 (old 13.3" M1 MacBook Air design)
13" M2 MacBook Air base price $1199 (new 13.6" M2 MacBook Air design)

13" M2 MacBook Pro base price $1299 (old 2 USB-C port 13" MacBook Pro design)

14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro base price $1999
16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro base price $2499

The 14" and 16" also can be bought with an optional M1 Max SoC.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

so you think the cheapest Air going forward in the future will be 14 inch $1199? no more basic $999 air?

Who knows what the future brings? You're asking an internet forum to speculate.

What do you need and how much do you want to spend? The M1 is an incredible value machine and frequently even cheaper on offer. You say you don't need any more power. So it sounds like a good buy for you.

Is there a reason you keep falsely calling this new air a 14"? its .3" larger screen than the previous air due to the smaller bezels all around the display, most notably the top and bottom bezels. It’s virtually identical in size to the old air besides the thickness. But its still advertised as a 13" because it is.

This is the new air, they kept the basic air around as a cheaper option for those that still want it, but yes, this is the new base air and base price. Costs have gone up, inflation is bigger then its been in years. That’s also why they didn't drop the price of the old air like they normally do on old models. Still charging full price when it came out 2 years ago. To me that doesn’t seem as good of a bargain if you want to ignore the inflation aspect

I chose the M1 Air over the M2 Air or Pro models. Seeing as Apple have just kept the M1 in the line-up I think you'll be fine for quite some time.

If you want the MBA without the notch, with the old design, get the M1 now while it’s still on sale. It’s a great deal. Think about your needs in terms of RAM and storage, and make the purchase.

By the way, as others have pointed out, the new M2 MBA with notch isn’t 14”. The 14” MacBook is the MacBook Pro.
