Buy Iphone 4 without contract without being American

I bought a 3GS in October for full price at an Apple retail store without an AT&T service plan or contract. I had to sign an agreement saying that I wouldn't use it with any carrier other than AT&T, but then the sales rep gave me the sealed, boxed phone with no problems.

Since I'm in the US, it came with an AT&T SIM card installed. When I turned it on, it wanted to be connected to iTunes and wouldn't let me use it, so I connected it up. iTunes talked to some Apple server and then my phone became activated and then I could use it for all of the non-cellular functions just fine. (Even the GPS worked!) The two or three times I restored the phone after that I needed the SIM card back in just to activate it, but apart from that, I left the SIM card out of the phone (though it works just fine with it in as well; it says "No Service").

So, unless they've changed something since the 3GS, you'll be good to go."

You can go there and check, I've read it 10 times and I can't see in his text the "you need to be an AT&T costumer", but I can be wrong...

most of the reps are saying you must be a AT&T costumer..

Well I think I'll have to wait and see, maybe closer to Christmas it will be easier to know...

* JB will be ready for Christmas I guess, we don't need to rush the things...

** For the World cup answer, Brazil won 5 world cups, remember that, and US never got one...

either this guy is lying or his experience was a fluke. I have had every iPhone since the begining and several of each version (warranty exchanges and so forth) and every single one would not go past the "connect to itunes screen until you had an active ATT Sim in it.

as far a brazil winning 5 world cups. SO!!! most americans could not give 2 sh*ts about soccer. So just because Brazil has one 5 makes them better that US? whatever. I just realized that I dont care whether or not you get a phone so I will not be viewing this thread again.

Actually you can activate the iPhone with any Inactive AT&T sim. It will get you passed the lock screen and into the home screen. So the one that came with the phone would activate it but obviously wouldn't unlock it. It will be just an iPod touch.
As far as brazil they haven't won anything for a long time.
They were pathetic again in this world cup.
I guess all they got is living in the past good old days:)

No, you have to provide the details of an AT&T account or they will not sell to you.

However, you could try buying from an individual that is reselling theirs.

I went on opening sale day and purchased a non commitment iphone4
a week later a buddy of mine, (with the info I gave him) went and did the same. just PM me if you want and I will tell you what to expect....it is a very easy process and NO you will not need an active AT&T account....nothing, zer0
about AT&T....all you gotta say is the magic words "Non-Commitment"
and they will sell it to you.....
they will tell you:
"you know it is still locked to AT&T, though, Right?"
and you will be like "yes, yes me knows that" ;)

I'm not silly at all I've been looking for this a while here, I just don't want to give a lot of work to my friend, he'll be visiting US, I'm not asking you as well to send me one, I'm figuring out a way myself, but as far as I can go online I don't know if I can enter a Apple store and buy one full priced without FID, and I'm not jealous at all, I'll have mine in the right time, enjoy yours, Brazil still wins US on a lot of aspects.

I just think no one needs to be pissed off...

By the way on ebay it will be the same price as the brazilian one, expensive...
