Hi all,
I'm buying anew macbook. My dilemma is:

I can get an new "old" macbook now that I know will fit my needs well or...
I can wait till the end of novemeber till the new ones arrive here at the "end of the world".
I will use it for word processing, mail, internet and some light photoshop (for web development). NO games whatsoever.
I will dual boot with XP.

Honestly, I'm reading some of these threads about washed out screens, keyboards off (leopard related?), sloppy X3100 driver, and I'm wondering if I wont be better of just buying the one with GMA950 (which is the only one sold here) and not wai another 3 weeks.

On the other hand, I NEED to use a laptop at the office and at the moment I'm without one to use.

Also, looking at this GMA950 VS X3100 benchmarks, I cant see that much of a difference that will help you dramatically in your daily tasks.

Knowing that I will have to wait to get my hands on my FIRST mac, is killing me, and I'm not sure I can resist....

What would you do/think?

:)

I would wait...
the performance gain is substantial in my opinion.

25% memory performance

that is pretty good in my opinion...besides it's just 3 weeks of a wait.
I'd wait.

yeah, I see your point

Its just that I've been wanting a mac for so long but for various reasons never took the plounge (hint: look at my join date...), and now I'm so pumped about this that it seems that the wait is impossible.

But I guess the most rational thing to do is just wait a bit...

Why not just order it online? It would get there much sooner then 3 weeks

I'm afraid thats a no go.
The local reseller (and thus, EVERY store online or not) will only receive the new macbooks by the end of the month. They just received several macbooks, but the gma950 ones. go figure!
We dont have an official apple store online in portugal (yet), or an oficial apple representation/presence for that matter

Also, the keyboard is different from country to country...

I'm surprised that in Porto (Portugal's second largest city, no?) that you all still haven't received them.

And jeesh no online store for Portugal. Coño. Have it shipped to Badajoz and pick it up there :) just kidding..

Orders made on the Apple Store website won't have anything to do with your local reseller. They'll be mailed to you directly by Apple.

Will the new graphics card actually make a difference if he's playing NO games?

Although I do agree that if it's only a matter of time, then try to suck it up until the new model is available. I bought a refurb at the Apple store and am happy with the cost savings, but that doesn't seem to apply in your case.

wrong. EVERY apple computer that enters portugal goes through the local importer/distributor (named "interlog"): http://www.apple.com.pt/por/
Notice how thats not even an apple domain...and the online store, well...its a wanna be!

The local importer is a joke:
  • try to get a leopard family pack: good luck!
  • When the nnew imacs came out the importer was selling them with the old keyboards (the white ones!!!). Hows that for surreal?

General rule of thumb: new products show up here after 1 month of being released WORLDWIDE!

Apple is showing signs of an effective and REAL web presence in Portugal (http://www.apple.com/pt/support), but thats the only page in portuguese thats hosted at the apple.com domain. Something is coming...

So, the only way to get it directly is to order it in spain, whick I'm not keen on doing (Keyboard is different).

Thats really the question I'm asking my self over and over again!

As I can see it, the new macbook offers:
  • better graphic card/chipset
  • new keyboard imprint
  • larger vents at the back
  • possible better batery life

Cons:
  • sloppy X3100 drivers (temporary?)
  • washed out screens(?)
  • keyboard shuts down (leopard related?)

I dont game AT ALL! But,
I see the points in better resale value (irrelevant for me), and just a better allround computer.
The question is will I/anyone see a difference in day to day usage?:(

Man, I could go out now and have one by lunch time (its 10am here) or I could wait 3 more weeks and linger arround here and be without a computer that I'm really in need to take to the office...
