Buy New 13" MacBook Air or save $100 on 2014 Model?

So new MacBook Airs refreshes announced. You guys think I should get the new one or save $100 and pick up last years model? I don't need the thunderbolt 2 connector. I will use it once in a while for light gaming.

It's your money, do what you want. I'd buy the most current model in this case.
The only time I've recommended buying an earlier model was when that joke of an update happened to the MacMini.

Agreed. The only people who should go for a "previous year" model are those looking at the Mac Mini. The 2012 quad-core is far superior to 2014's abomination of an update.

What is wrong with Apple lately?

Yosemite 10.0 > FAIL
iOS 8.0 > FAIL
2014 Mac Mini > FAIL
New "Photos" app to replace iPhoto/Aperture still vaporware FAIL
2015 Macbook > nice new tech wrapped in a single-port enclosure of FAIL.

Agreed on getting the most up-to-date model. The resell value alone worth more than 100 bucks, if you are looking to upgrade again in a year or so.

I just bought the 2014 model...

The battery is great enough as is, and really I don't care for the updates. I took a $100 off discount and am very happy.

If you're planning to keep this for 4/5 years or so, I really doubt getting the new version will raise you the extra $100.

While some say buying the 2014 is not worth the $100 savings, what about saving even more money and getting the 2013? The main difference between 2013 and 2014 was the introduction of the faster flash storage. Now the 2015 adds a "slight" processor bump and Thunderbolt 2. So I have been keeping an eye out for the 2013 refurb for $719 ($180 less than the new model). Is this silly?

Not silly at all. In fact, it's the smartest thing to do.

Who upgrades laptops every year? They are not cellphones!

With Macs having such a great resale value, one could pretty much sell their old machine and purchase new annually with little out of pocket cost especially if you get refurbs or wait till best buy has a sale.

Thanks everyone. I got an 11" and gave it to a niece. I love the weight and form factor of it. I figure I'll just wait for a day or two and order the 2015 MacBook air 13". I like to game sometimes with the portability so I should get the MBA 2015

Pick up a 14 or 13 on eBay or craigslist from folks looking to have the latest. I got a 14 for $550 and I am surprised how much I like it over the iPad.

Ask for student discount, they'll give you $100 off the new one

Best Buy has the previous base model MBA 13 marked down $200. If you have a .edu email address, you can get a student discount for another $50 off online. $750 pretax is not too bad at all IMO.

I bought one on monday for 809.. went back today and got it for 649 out the door. Bought at 799-$50 edu coupon - 10% movers..... went over to DE with no taxes. can't really pass it up... was less expensive than an ipad

How difficult was it to use both the student discount and the movers coupon? I've heard that some stores give you a hard time for trying to use both.

First place i bought the mba at they dude would not do it for me...he said he could but he wouldn't because of the wording of the edu coupon.... anyway.. when they lowered the price again, i went to customer service at another location and she scanned both without even asking

what is this movers discount you are talking about :)

go to the post office...i guess they are still good for something

Hmm, so it seems like it depends on the person you get. Good to know for future reference.

2014 mba 13'' - $669

Like someone else mentioned BestBuy has the 13'' MBA for 799. After speaking to several managers I was able to get them to stack the Mover's 10% coupon and the $50 student offer to get the price down to $669 before taxes. Not a bad deal at all!

Going to be a silly question but how does best buy confirm the student discount/edu email? Just trying to get that additional $50 off
