Apple never updates during big promotions, and right now, they won't be updating until the Student Union promotion runs out, at least

Well, I don't think that's quite true. There have been updates announced during promotions in the past. It depends on what the promotion is really about, what it is that Apple is trying to move. As it applies to so many computers in their line, your argument would be that they're not going to update the iMac, Power Mac, iBook or PowerBook until September. While it may well be true that they're not going to update the PBs until then, waiting another couple of months for the iBook seems a bit of a stretch, given how long it's been since the last update (Oct 04).

So, the long and the short of it is, we just don't know. There isn't enough information about what's coming up to be sure of anything.

But thanks for the heads-up on the Student Union promotion, I hadn't noticed it before. But now I know that I can get an iPod Mini with my new PowerBook!!

You get a new Powerbook? I always thought you hated them?

Hated them? I've been running on PowerBooks ever since I got a PowerBook 520c about 10 years ago. I cringe every time I think about tying myself down to a desktop machine. Mobility has simply become too important to me.

So, no, I've never hated PowerBooks. Quite the contrary, I've always loved them. I have been frustrated with the lack of strong updates lately, but I guess that criticism could be leveled squarely at IBM at this point. Those updates are coming, but they'll be Intel based. As, at least for the moment, I still need to be able to run Classic, I need to have one of the last PPC 'Books. Also, the timing of getting a new computer now (i.e. within the next three weeks, or so) is working out great for other reasons. It's all good!

As if in answer to my earlier comment, today there's a Page 2 Rumor about Apple trying to clear out extra iPods. So, perhaps the Student Union promotion is about the iPods, not the computers...

I had the same question which I asked to a sales person at a mac store. I also mentioned about trading it in when mactels come out. He said its an ok idea to trade it in if you dont mind loosing a couple hundred dollars to trade.

Buy it damnit. You can play Halo, AA & Wolfenstein on it without it slowing down so you can thus do everything else you need to.

Late February/Early March 2006: Mac Mini and eMac
Late April/Early May 2006: iBook and PowerBook
July 2006: iMac
Late September/Early October 2006: Power Mac
January 2007: xServe

didn't steve say the switch to intel would begin in Mid 2006 (june i would think)

i think we will see powerbooks and ibooks first in june. i suspect the mac mini will have been updated in January '06 with a G4 processor. the rest of the updates will come later on. in 2006 and the entire apple line will be switched by June 2007. emac will be discontinued soon.

Actually, he said that by the time they met again for the next WWDC they would already have released Intel based products to some of their product lines targeting the consumer and mobility product lines first. So, while we might not see Intels until June '06, I wouldn't be surprised to see them released as early as late Feb or early March. Hence my guess.

Well, the time has finally arrived! I am typing this on my new Powerbook. And like anyone who owns one will say, get one now. It's a very nice machine. And I'm very happy with my purchase! :)

Plus this is my introduction to Tiger as well. Oooo yeah! I'm one happy person today.
