Just some background. So I tried various pc laptops for school and none worked out. I'm a senior mechanical engineer major and I know what I'll need or what not. At home I have a power custom pc I built so if I ever need anything powerful I have that. I just want a solid laptop for school use with good screen and good battery.

Im able to get a new MBPr 256 gb new right now for 1166 total after tax because discover is offering 22% cash back till the end of year on any apple pay purchases. My questions is at this price should I just go ahead and buy the darn thing or wait for skylake update . I'm just afraid they'll make it lighter other then anything. I'm not in a rush but I would love to have it now specially considering the price. Skylaje should be out early 2016 right?

I would take that deal. I assume it's 8gb memory. If you are afraid of new design coming, you will never get it because new things come every year.

The only MBPr with a discrete GPU starts at $2,500.00. Inventor, Solidworks, Solid Edge etc... run like crap w/o a discrete GPU.

I would recommend no less than 16gb of ram as well.

Seems like a good deal for a solid portable computer, as long as you don't expect it to do the heavy lifting I think you'll be surprised by how capable it is.

The whole "computer on the go, computer at home" thing gets old fast unless you store EVERYTHING in the cloud. Even then, you'll want to do something on the go that your mobile computer can't handle. Put all your money into a top of the line 15" MBPr with lots of storage and 16GB RAM. You'll have the power and pixels to work on the go and can also connect it to a big monitor at home.

I always say don't wait. Because if you wait you will be waiting forever. There will always be something new. Especially in the computer world.

Wow, that is a really good deal. I was going to wait for the Skylake upgrade (not in a rush to upgrade), but at that price after the Discover cashback, I might just upgrade now. Currently have a 2008 macbook for a laptop, so need to upgrade sometime...

I agree with both of the above. The 15" gives you a good screen size, with a kick ass screen, but is also super portable. I commute by bike to work most days, and have to fly around the country some days as well, and the 15" is plenty portable for both scenarios.

Good luck!
