The current sales gap is because the Touch is so far behind the iPhone :D. Make the Touch hardware equal to the iPhone and the iPhone will suffer.

Again, folks who want cell coverage will stick with the Iph. Shouldn't steal any significant # of users away from the Iph.

And given how far both have come along, the gaps keep getting bigger and bigger from one generation to the next. It's shocking when you really think about it.

I respectfully disagree. Most with smart phones (such as the iPhone) will not get rid of their smart phones.

They will not get rid of their iPhone and then turn around and buy an iPod touch and feature phone. It just won't happen. Once people are always connected, and access email etc. on the go, they really won't go back.

You can buy it now, but if you want the last updates of OS and apps, DON'T BUY IT!!!

I have a 4th gen touch with iOS 6.1.6 and i'm happy with my apps and music, but i'm a modest consumer :)

Do not spend 199 usd on a Touch 16GB with 4 years internals.

Do not spend 249 usd on a Touch 32GB with 4 years internals.

Just dont spend anything over 100 USD for the current Touch. Its only good for music and video maybe, get a classic while you still can or a nano if you are itune addicts. My prediction is apple might kill Ipod line very soon, their shuffle not even match the sales of Sansa Clip. They could turn Ipod name into specialize app on the Iphone. Apple dont sell cheap products, they would rather discontinue them.

I would not buy a device in 2015 that contained 2011 technology. Look at all the complaints about A5 devices and iOS 8. I mean, Apple even issued an updated that specifically attempted to increase performance on A5 devices (but they lied).

You don't want to buy a device and have it dropped in a year or so. Realistically, either Apple will support the A5 on iOS 9 but allow it to suffer significant performance issues or they'll discontinue it and replace it with at least an A6 (I think A7) chip. That or they'll discontinue it all together. How long can you sell a 2011 SoC in 2015?

I agree that there is still a market. From kids to Android users like you mentioned. And despite the commodity that a smartphone is, not ALL parents are willing to get (and pay for) a smartphone for each child. The iPod touch was a great way to have a smartphone without the phone. It was my second Apple product (first being an iPod Nano) and led to me getting an iPhone (x2), iPad, Apple TV, and Mac.

Do both. It's certainly cheap enough to. Otherwise, signs don't look good for a new model.

Please, tell me where do I find these "cheap" iPod 5s? My 4 Touch **** the bed about a year ago, but I've been nursing it along waiting for a new release. I'm at the point now where it can't run anything over iOS 6, everything crashes constantly, it can barely play music because it's too messed up, and neither the power button nor the other button work.

IpT5 has been serving me well... performance in games has been pretty good (Plants Vs. Zombies 2 for example). However, that's all I pretty much use it for. My Galaxy s4 is where the internet connection's at. Also, very important is I'm still on ios7.0.4. At this point, I'll switch to ios8 if a new IpT6 comes out. I've already had to forgo one free app since that required ios8

Not too shabby. You can get a 64 GB for $240, and still get most of the same features as if it were new (including new case and battery). If there's no news of an IpT6, I may try to do this as a backup IpT5. Free shipping too, although you need to see if you'll have to pay sales tax.

Yeah, it's a pretty good deal. I've bought a couple of the 5th Gen iPod touches that I have from there. The really sweet deal seems to be the 16GB 2013 (rear camera-less black and silver) model iPod touch for $150. Though the 4th gen models for $~100 aren't bad either if taken at face value.

How do the 5th gens run on iOS 8? I haven't heard any feedback on that from an iPod Touch owner.

Given what I've heard here, other forums, and from people I know... YMMV. Some folks report some slowdowns. Then you've got both ends... it works fine, or it's so slow it rendered their IpT5 unusable.

Personally, no experience other than I avoided ios8 as "better be safe than sorry" and "why fix it if it ain't broke" measures. Much like with my IpT3 and IpT4in getting the latest version of ios, I'm not going to bother with ios8 until I get an IpT6 (assuming it's coming out and up to snuff).

That is a shitt ton of money for a 2-1/2-year-old machine, not to mention 64GB has been way to small.

iOS devices have never been priced for bang-for-buck. And yes, 64GB is way too small. Don't expect it to change, given the likelihood of the iPod touch's discontinuation.

It's sluggish, comparable to iOS 6.1.x on the fourth generation iPod touch and iOS 5.1.1 on the third generation iPod touch. It's still usable, but the experience is far from fluid or enjoyable. Depending on who you're talking to and their tolerance for such responsiveness and/or lack thereof, you will likely get various sorts of feedback. I have two fifth generation iPod touches on 8.1.2 (the latest as of this comment), one with 7.1.2 and one with 6.1.3. The performance degrades accordingly version to version…just like every iOS device that has ever been.

64 GB is small for an IpT?:confused: I take it you and other such folks also put lots of music, photos, and videos on there? I'm running low on space on my IpT5 32 GB model, but I can stand to remove about 5GB of unused apps. I also have 1.7 GB of photos that can be transferred over.... yeah, in hindsight, 64 GB would be nice.

It is scary to hear that 64GB is getting small when we had 8 GB Iph, and 16GB Iph are still a thing.

I have a large App collection; though I'm discovering that a lot of them are better suited for the iPad (and, thusly, there's no real point for them to be taking up precious space on my iPod touch). I also have a photo library of about 6GB (when formatted for the iPod touch), a music library of 32GB, and no shortage of video content that I'd like to load (as the 5th generation iPod touch is surprisingly decent with video, especially given that it naturally has a 16x9 ratio and no longer needs the black bars on either side). 128GB would be stellar and probably enough for me for a while. Then again, I have a 128GB Cellular iPad Air that is always on the verge of running out of space, so there you go.

The idea that we can rely on iCloud to offset the limitations in on-board storage capacity doesn't quite follow especially when (a) iCloud doesn't stream to the device, it downloads content to the device and (b) the iPod touch is WiFi only by design; iCloud is useless to you in the car unless you are tethering to a mobile phone, hotspot or iPad/tablet.
