"Well for example I can get this refurb for $2,469 --> https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/produ...-Intel-Core-i7-with-Retina-display-Space-Gray"

hmm why is so much that refurb 2469$? when you can config the new 2018 model at 2,499.00 with
Hardware
  • 2.7GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
  • Retina display with True Tone
  • Touch Bar and Touch ID
  • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655
  • 16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
  • 512GB SSD storage
  • Four Thunderbolt 3 ports

  • So for 30$....or i am missing something ??

Keep in mind I'm in Canada so the prices I mentioned are in Canadian dollars and much higher. Yes we're getting ripped off royally up here.

That is good savings. Another consideration would be long term use. If plan on keeping for at least few years, the 2018 would be better.

Says $1869 ?

I'm in Canada so prices are much higher. When you clicked the link it may have reverted to the US store perhaps?

Do you really think it's worth the price?

It’s an expensive machine, no doubt about it. However, in my humble opinion the cost differences between the two generations are ultimately small enough that if it were me I’d be going with the newer model. Performance upgrades aside, based on the ifixit article I read it does seem there is some hope that the third gen keyboard may be (hopefully) better protected from the issues that have been noted in the 2016 and 2017 models. Even if those are covered by Apple, it’s just not something I’d like to deal with if it were me.

You are paying a premium for that. I try to get at least 3 years out of my machines so for those reasons the premium would be worth it. Not all years are like that, but I happen to think this is one of them. Again, just my opinion

If your current MBP works perfectly then the wise thing to do is to wait a few months for any issues on the newest generation of MPBs.

If there is no problems then you look for sales and then make a purchase on a new model.

*Note there will be sales coming up especially around black friday which is when you will have plenty of information of these laptops. There's no need to scratch some purchase itch now on buying a new laptop unless money isn't an issue for you.

Also remember the newest generation MPBs will hold a better resale for you down the road over the 2017 models for obvious reasons.

My conundrum is that I can get a 2017 13” base MacBook Pro for $1099 refurb. That is $700 less than a new 2018 for likely a negligible difference in discernible performance for my needs (Internet, word processing, school).
I had a refurb base model 13" 2017 MBP for a week or so and it was a pretty decent machine. Fast, quiet, long battery life, bright colorful screen. A joy to use. I only sent it back because the 128GB HD was a tad too small for my needs. Ironically, I ended up getting a refurb 2017 12" MacBook, the base model, and it's been great! Not the fastest runner on the planet, but quick enough for me and it has a 256GB HD. Check it out. It's nice!
