I think the smart cover is pretty sweet, but once you take it off its just another thing to find a place for...I wish it could just swing around the back while still connected or something...I hate having to take something off and put it back on constantly. I'll prolly go nude for a while, then pick up an attache style case when there's a few more to choose from.

...with the smart case, how can you protect the back against scratches? would be nice if apple just redesign the existing case.
Well, I can't speak for everyone, but my iPad has gone essentially case-less since launch day last year and it doesn't have a scratch on it. I had a couple cases on it from time to time, but they were short-lived things. Hated the way they felt. It's been naked I'd say 95% of the time and mine doesn't have a single scratch on the back. Granted, I'm careful with it. Even the plastic Apple on the back is like new.

I do keep it in an Incipio Underground Envelope when carrying it around (generally in a Timbuk2 bag,) but in use, it's naked. I just don't see the point, I guess. Makes it bigger, heavier, uglier, and feels awful. The nicest thing I've seen is Apple's "smart cover." So if you're a gentle user, don't worry about the back and enjoy your new iPad and cover. Personally, I wouldn't even bother with the smart cover, either, as it'll get in the way. But I can understand why some will want it - the fold up stand design is pretty cool.

did you put any protector at the back of your iPad as well as the screen? Or just simply naked?

I'm pretty sure you can swing it all the way around to the back while the iPad is in use. Says so on the Apple website. Unless you mean something else.

It does swing around to back while connected. Their are videos showing this.

They may sell out...I purchased my ipad and case on launch day last year - ordered the case I wanted and sold the Apple case for a profit to someone who could not find one and "needed it".

BTW - this time I am going to use my iPad two like I have nothing to lose. Ill get the cover but I don't care if the back gets scratched. Protect the glass and forget about the a##. Everyone gets so caught up protecting their magical device that they treat it like a irreplaceable family keepsake. I'm all for taking care of it in general... but I want to use this thing for all its worth.
So true I have decided to use the hell out of my iPad and when the time comes I'll get a 3. I pulled a 1st gen iPod out of it's case a while back and it was practically brand new, the battery wouldn't hold a charge for **** but it looked good, I decided then to use my devices and not baby them so much. I find that if I baby them I don't get the full experience.

Going with a dark blue Yankees skin(skin it) for the back and the gray smart cover :)

I'll personally get the cover. You have 14 days to return it if you don't like it. That will give you some time as well to see if anything better comes along.

That I did not know. While the idea of the cover is amazing, I don't want my back getting all scratched.

Hmm... don't some places let you do custom skins based on a picture or graphic you upload?

That could be fun... some ideas might be to make the back look like:
  • clay or stone tablet
  • piece of wood
  • image of the front of the ipad at the home screen
  • perhaps use an image of the back of a Xoom? :D

Cover is a great idea but too expensive for what it is so I'll be skipping it. If it was $10 less I might be enticed but for $40 I can fine a case that protects the entire iPad. Plus black is leather only and I'm def not spending $70.

Lets be honest the cover really doesn't do much to protect the glass screen and it's the sides and backside that are most scratch prone. It's not as big of a joke as the bumper case, but almost.

Nope, never had a skin or anything like that on there. Just did a good inspection of it to make sure I haven't been talking out my ass and it's in brand new condition. Obviously, I baby it. I set it down on something rather than on a rough surface, I keep it in the envelope, and I am very gentle with it, but I don't think most people with cases are doing any different, either.

Smart cover provides no drop protection. Screen would still shatter if ipad was dropped and landed on it's side.

I was going to grab the Smart Cover, but the $40 price point is a complete turnoff. I'll use an Incase sleeve until I see a case that I really. The Incase only cost me $15.
