Hey guys, I am thinking about buying the new iPad that was announced yesterday.

Right now I have the first generation iPad mini but I only use it for Netflix because safari and the whole iPad is so slow. I want to use the iPad for reading the news, browsing safari, photos, netflix and stuff and some work (writing, emails and using the logic pro remote app). I probably won't use an apple pencil but is the 2018 iPad significantly faster than the 2017 iPad? I won't get the Pro because that's overkill for my use.

Let me know!

You convinced me lol! The mini is basically unusable for me so I end up doing most of the things I would do on the iPad on my iPhone. I kind of wish they had added the option to add 256GB but 128 should be enough!

You would also probably be happy with the iPad mini 4 for your usage. The screen is remarkable, even more crisp than the 9.7” models. But going from mini 1 to the retina 9.7 screen will be pretty amazing.

I definitively want the 9.7 screen size! Makes it easier to leave the laptop at home on trips!

Maybe an odd question, but is there a good alternative to the iPad Smart Case fro this iPad? I know that the iPad Air 2 Smart case doesn't really fit. I have always used there smart case for my iPad mini but saw that Apple is only selling the front cover and no back cover.

Go for it. I replaced my Mini 2 with a 2017 iPad last week and it's a huge jump. I'm not going to return my 2017 for the 2018 as I see no point. Buy the 2018 and use it to death.

Going from the A9 to the A10 alone is worth swapping them out.

I just buy Smart Case clones from Amazon marketplace sellers for ~$10 or so.

This is the one we use with the 2017 iPad 9.7. Looks like it might be compatible with the 2018, too.

How does this iPad compare to the 2016 iPad Pro? I think it goes for 200 bucks more right now.

2018 iPad is a bit faster but 2016 iPad Pro has more premium features (fully laminated display, 4 speakers, TrueTone, etc).

I expect the 2018 iPad will have much better battery life, though. My dad's 2017 iPad (A9, 32.9Wh) can manage ~15 hours screen on time while my 2016 Pro 9.7 (A9X, 27.9Wh) could only do ~10 hours back when it was brand new. Mine has now dropped to ~9 hours.

It’s probably smarter to get the 2018 model as it’s 2 years newer. Maybe the new model will support more iOS updates in the future.

Assuming one doesn't need more than 128GB storage and doesn't want the ASK, then yes, I'd opt for the 2018 model, too.
