So I found a deal on a 12.9" 256GB wifi+LTE IPP with a pretty basic case and an apple pencil for $700. I would really like to get an IPP but I'm afraid that I may regret it if they release a new one in September that is significantly better. I'm tempted to just get this one to see how I like it and then if I want to upgrade I should be able to sell this one and recoup enough of my money to justify it down the road. I'm traveling for work this weekend and it would for sure come in handy for all the notes I will be taking, but I can totally make do with paper and pen if this isn't a good enough deal to jump on it.

I apologize if these kinds of threads are annoying, but the iPad pro is still so new to me that I don't know what is considered a good deal.

If its a second generation device then its a good deal. The maximum loss you are going to face is up to $200 if you regret and sell it later. If you can take that loss then go ahead and buy it.

Just as a second opinion: have you also considered the 2018 iPad instead of the pro version? Sure, the pro has a better screen but the regular iPad now supports the Apple Pencil too and seems good value.

I love my pro, and I'd buy another one in a heartbeat, but I think you are right. The revamped regular iPad is a great bargain for those who don't need anything fancy in terms of the screen.

I’m in the same predicament, but i’ll probably end up waiting for the new iPP in September/October. And the 2017 iPad Pros will be cheaper by then anyway, so it’s a good idea to wait.

I just don’t fancy the mechanical home button on the iPad Pro, I’ve had bad luck with those on my iPhones. Thinner bezels and probably the A12x chip is enticing.

I considered it, but I am ultimately going to be replacing my MacBook Pro with the IPP and so I really want the bigger screen. Plus if I get the 128GB wifi only version and an apple pencil I'm looking at $529 plus tax on the 2018 iPad. Makes $700 for a second get 12.9 256GB wifi+cellular version, plus pencil, plus case sound like a downright steal.

Just had the same problem a month ago and decided to get a used 12.9 gen 2 512 GB Cellular iPP for 799€ on eBay. Had the 2018 iPad for a month after I gave away my 12.9 gen 1 to my brother hoping for a new one at WWDC. After working with the 12.9 for nearly two years I could not get used to that „mini“ iPad again. Decided not to wait any longer and bought the used one and I am happy again.

Now I can wait very relaxed what happened next. The resale value is still high enough to not loose too much money. If they release only one iPP with 11“-11.5“ or only a CPU upgrade with Face ID I might wait until they release an OLED iPP in the future...

I just bought the 12.9 brand new. These things keep their value so when the new one comes out I'll sell this one and buy the new one for a few extra bucks.

To an extent they retain value, but they drop Quickly with the announcement of the new iPad being announced, its usually the higher storage iPads they Retain somewhat better value.

But in terms of offering advice the OP, I would wait until after September to see if there will be an iPad Keynote or not, which I believe would be separate from the iPhone.

I believe the 10.5 will retail value slightly more due to the A10 processor, 4 GB of RAM, second gen Touch ID and better base storage.
