i got a guy offering me a 4.1 dual socket. from the pics he sent me it looks mint. for the price around 860,

this is more of a side grade for me since i'm coming from a x58 pc platform, so its still the same socket except i'll gain another socket.

is this a good route to go for? or should i get a souped up mac mini lol

and what should i look out for if i decide to purchase it.

to highlight one of my situation, since this is a 2009 machine, would i be better off getting a high end mini? i don't really care for usb 3 or thunderbolt since i have no peripherals that use them, besides an occasional usb 3 thumb drive.

One thing to keep in mind are the thermals for the machines. The high end mini will only be able sustain it's max clock speed until the CPU needs to cut back to cool down. The MP Xeon's can keeps going forever. In essence you can get better performance from the older MP. That's one thing I was considering. I finally decided on a 2009 MP 2.66 QC with the intent to upgrade later.

I got one a couple months ago for $800.
Gave it a good clean-up, added a PCIe Sata card with an SSD and it now flies like the wind!
I was waiting for an updated Mini and I'm happy I went the Mac Pro way after seeing the latest Mini updates.

Next step will be a new GPU.

What are the spec's on the machine?
That would help us a bit about what you should be looking for...
