The thing is a fully loaded 2017 Dell XPS 15 is the same price as a base 2015 MacBook Pro...

Im also trying to make a purchase decision. I would rather a new 2017 MacBook Pro but those things are CAD$3000+ !!

I was in the same position over a year ago in a way. I had a old MacBook Pro and was deciding if I wanted to get a Dell XPS 15 inch or stay with my MacBook. I mad the wrong decision and bought the dell XPS. I was going to create a new thread about going back to a MBP 13 inch, but I'll do it here.

All the Dell XPS was really good for was for games. Pure and simple. the built in Windows mail app is garbage and a pain in the a$$ to do anything since it was touch focus (IMO). Office didn't run differently or any other app that windows put out for both systems didn't work differently.

When it comes to comparing App stores, it depends what you're looking for. If your looking for games, windows 10 store. Apps, MacOS App Store. You will not find Spark by readdle, Airmail, or any other good apps that are on the Mac App store (besides password managers). In most cases, all the good apps will be available on the developers website. Which is disappointing as I don't trust buying software anywhere outside, the App Store....unless it is steam or GOG.com.

The much loved live tiles on Windows 10 are also pure garbage. Some work (windows built on apps), some don't (rss reader app from the windows store), and some are pointless (twitter). Honestly, the dock and notifications on MacOS is much, much more informative and useful than the live tiles and notifications on Windows 10. MS calendar looks like a dogs breakfast (IMO) and don't expect much from outlook from MS office if you plan to use that to sync your iCloud email account. Reminders are very limited if you use the built-in reminders app on IOS and the new MS to-do app will conflict to the IOS reminder app on IOS..especially when you do schedule times to remind you.

Hardware wise, it's a mix bag. the keyboard is good and the screen was really good (1080p FHD screen btw). The touchpad was good, but it doesn't compare to the macbook's touchpad. Why Dell put the speakers facing down is beyond me. They sound Ok, but I prefer what Apple did in the new MBP's. Because it makes sense and they sound a lot better. If you get the dell with the Nvidia card, expect it to get very warm have a laptop cooler or whatever (can't remember what its called) if you plan to have on your lap. Most important, get rid of all the Dell S**tty software off your machine. Guaranteed you will get blue screen or a yellow screen of death regularly (every 2 or 3 weeks..or sooner in my case at times). The Dell machine is fine now after taking all the Dell crap off..but it does run warmer (for some stupid reason that I don't know).

When it comes to battery, don't leave it on sleep mode, you have to turn off the machine all the time. I tried sleep mode at first when I first got the machine, never again. If if it was in the bag while on the go, I would have a very warm laptop when I took it out and little battery life left. Even when I close the lid at home and leave it on the table when I go out, I would have no battery life left. No problems with my new MBP. close the lid, it goes to sleep and stays cool on my table or in my backpack if I take it with me. Battery life pretty much the same when I open it up again (or loses a few % if I didn't open it up for a while) and the lock screen is waiting for me to use Touch ID or enter my password to unlock my machine.

Here's another thing, you will get phone calls from Dell trying to force you to buy their extended warranty. They called me asking if I wanted it and I kept on saying no as I will not give my c/c # over the phone to them. I'll put it in other way; they way they were talking, it felt that the machine was going to break down after my regular warranty expired. Couldn't find anything on their site that you could buy it online either (probably is though).

I spent 1850 on that machine and I wish I bought a new MacBook Pro instead. I'll keep it for games or when I need to use windows when I go back to college to keep my payroll certification and I need a windows machine).

You may be spending more for the MacBook, but you are getting quality, a much better running OS (IMO), and painless syncing between your IOS devices & MacBook Pro.

As some have mentioned, it's tough to think about buying 2 year old tech in order to get the specs that you need. With that said, I just popped for a refurb 2015 15" rMBP. Didn't like the idea of extra dongles and feel comfortable with a refurb at many $$$ lower that the new MBP with TB.
IMHO, Apple has shorted us on options and ports, another reason I went with the refurb. I'm a photographer and being able to use this out in the wild without having to hang a bunch of cords is worth buying the older hardware. That coupled with the positives I have read here, confirm that I feel I made the right decision. (plus I got 6 months free financing and no payments for 6 months through PayPal)
Some question I have for those that have purchased the rMBP, as this is my first :apple: Laptop:

• I am currently running a Mac Mini 2012 with 1 tb storage. I don't want to totally clone the rMBP at this time. I have 2 WD drives and I can back up the other files that I may need on that. Can you be selective in the Migration Assistant in order to do that?
• As I will use this as a portable, what have you used as either a case or skin to provide the most protection (yeah, I know it can and will be scuffed)
• I am currently using Sierra on my MM. I won't get the rMBP until Wednesday, so as I don't know was OS will be on it, I am holding off on upgrading my MM to High Sierra or will that make a difference?

Thanks in advance for any input and advice. :)

You can selectively choose what to transfer over but only to a certain point (Apps, Users, folders in Home etc), you can't choose on a per-file basis which some of the 3rd party cloning software lets you do.

I myself have never bothered to use permanent skins for any incarnation of MacBook/PowerBooks, the material Apple chooses always are durable enough, and I don't like having a layer of unnecessary insulation to make it warmer than not.

Refurbs are likely installed with a much earlier version of macOS depending on now long they have been in a warehouse. On my refurb 2015 15" which I bought last November, it was installed with 10.11 (at that point 10.12 Sierra was already out for a while). So yours may come with 10.11 or 10.12 and I am positive that it won't be 10.13.

What makes it difficult for me is that a brand new 15" MBP base model now costs a whopping CAD $3199.

They still sell the 2015 15" base MBP for CAD $2449 -- but that machine was only CAD $1999 when it came out, brand new.

So it'd cost $500 more to get the 2015 MBP 15" base now than when it was new. FeelsBadMan

I bought a refurbished 2015 quad 2.5Ghz with 1TB SSD for USD $2230 equivalent recently.
All my other devices are still using USB Type A, e.g. scanner, thumbdrive, Logitech receiver, external hard drive, SD card reader, some USB charger cables.
When those devices upgrade to USB Type C, I will follow, but not right now.

I found the 2015 refurb on their website for CAD$2080. Although, its more affordable, its still $2000 for a 3 year old machine...
