Don't plan on playing any of them from iTunes on the Air unless you go for the fully loaded one with the 2.0GHZ CPU as anything less cannot play anyhting 720p or 1080p from iTunes.

My Base 2011 13" MBA plays 1080p videos without an issue. OP ignore this guys comment he has no clue.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. As for not using more than 6GB of storage, well the Music collection I have is let alone 30GB so lol yeah..
I'll buy a Western Digital External portable passport Hard drive. 500GB.
Once again thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll post from my new MacBook Air soon :)

Yeah even I was surprised to read that. My 5 year old Dual Core 1.3Ghz PC runs 1080p smoothly.

I was refering specifically to movies from iTunes.

See requirements for HD movies here....

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3209

I know for a fact that I cannot play 720p or 1080p movies downloaded from the iTunes Store on my 2010 13" Air, have already had a case with AppleCare on this.

The minimum req for 1080p on itunes is a 2.4ghz C2D!!! That's 2007 technology. All the current MBA's surpass these specs by a long long way.

I had to make the same decision and I chose the MBP 13 base. The expandability factor was greater for me than the portability factor. Also 128GB was not enough space for me and upgrading the SSD through Apple was too much money. I am very happy with my choice, but I do love the style of the MBA. If you do get the MBA I would highly recommend getting the 8GB of RAM, you may not need it now but you can not upgrade it in the future if you want to.

Well I am a student of Accounting & Finance but I teach as well so mostly I use my laptop for Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Other than that I use a lot of utorrent, Skype, playing 1080p HD Movies and I am a die hard fan of metal and progressive rock so have around 30GB of music.
Other important stuff I use my laptop for is PDF files, dropbox and skydrive.
No gaming, I am a console gamer.

wow, other than your music choice you just described me lol and I was going to start a thread like this too

Based on your usage, the 13" base model MacBook Air seems perfect for you.

Now is a very good time to buy one, there probably won't be a newer model before next summer, and as usual with Apple, price of the current model won't drop until then.

If you run out of the 128GB of storage, using a USB 3.0 external hard drive for your music and movies is a good idea since those don't require the high read speed of flash memory. To have a fast computer, what matters is that you keep your OS and applications on your internal flash memory.

Enjoy your new Mac! Especially since this is your first one I'm sure you'll love it.

OP, the base 13" MBA is excellent. More than enough CPU and RAM for your needs. Enjoy your apple goodness when you get it! :)

Thank you :)

Thanks a lot. You guys have been really helpful. Glad I joined the forum.
Will make sure I am a regular member and can help out other as I start using and get to know my Mac. I am pretty good in gadgets and get to know them quick, already helped many people fix their iPhones since I got mine first 2 years ago, will be looking forward to do the same once I get my Mac.

Cheers :)

Just came home with my new MacBook Air 13" 4GB Ram 128GB Storage :)
using a mac for the first time so I will be annoying you guys a lot with basic questions, please excuse me.

Firstly, how do I completely remove an app/program? The guy at store installed many programs for me and I don't use a few of them such as Firefox.

Secondly, I set up my gmail account in the mail app and downloaded a .doc file from an email attachment. I don't know where it got saved and I don't see it in the downloads folder/app

Thanks :)

dieselee89, I put together a guide for someone new to Mac, switching from the PC. I originally put this together for a friend, then made a blog post about it. It is slightly out of date, as I put this together before Mountain Lion was released, but I don't think it matters. It covers some of the common questions that people ask when switching.

MacBook Pro and I liked it as well. And now I am confused on what to buy, the air or the pro?
can you guys give me pros and cons of both?
Sorry if I am bugging you guys a lot but I have never had a mac before so seriously don't know anything.
Btw my budget is $1200

This question is asked everyday, if u just spend time reading this forum.

Air not upgradable, Pro is. Air REALLY lightweight, excellent mobile device, Pro ur dealing with 4.5LB WITHOUT any accessories. Air limited ports, Pro more ports. Do you need ethernet? Do you need to hookup ethernet and external monitor at the same time? Do u mind having lots of cables hooked up to the machine like spider?

One more thing about the Mac, all the Windows Application you posses is going to the trash. U gotta purchase every app anew. Budget for that? UNLESS, and u can run Windows under a Macbook, but that's another thread.

Read-read-read-read please.

So I was about to transfer my music and photos from my Western Digital 1TB MyBook and when I connected it to my MBA it didn't show up.
something wrong here?
