It's simple--go with one of the top 3. Toyota, Lexus or Scion.

VW's are high maintenance and are well known for many electrical problems, especially the one's made it Mexico.

Resale stinks for diesel car--Americans don't want them.

Those are the the same company.... ;)

My opinion on Toyota's and Honda's is if you just want an appliance, they are good vehicles. But if you enjoy driving and if there is any amount of a car person in you, you will want to kill yourself. Toyota's are one of the most boring vehicles to drive outside of the new FR-S. Honda's are decent, but the engines suck. There is no power below 5,000 RPM.

I've thought about it. I know the money I can save by going with a used car, but I have been dumping more and more money into my current car and the idea of a brand new car with new warranties just sounds more appealing to me. I know certified pre-owned will come with its own warranty of some kind, but I think I still want to go news.
That was my mindset when I bought my car in 2011

Didn't help that used cars (2-3 years) were going for almost as much, it not in some cases more than a new car

All Subarus are all wheel drive. What the dealer won't tell you is that if you take a nail in a tire that's too close to the edge, you not only have to replace that tire, but the other three as well. If you're willing to do that, then go ahead and get AWD. The logic of accepting that escapes me, so that's why I won't be going with an AWD vehicle, ever.

The logic is that if you don't, with an awd system you will mess up your transmission due to having tires of varying sizes

buy a motorcycle then

You should go test drive the 2013 Honda Accord V6. Gets good gas mileage for a V6 and has plenty of power.

I haven't driven the Accord and wasn't planning on going with a "full size" car like that. If I was then other cars like the Altima, Legacy, Passat, etc would come into play. Getting a car like that with the option I want, get's them out of my price range for the most part.

I believe the Jetta's that are sold here in the US are made in Puebla Mexico.

The Cruze is impressive for the fuel economy and how comfortable it is inside, one of the radio entertainment system works great with the iPhone even natively manages Pandora.

I would avoid anything and everything made by General Motors. That company can't make a decent vehicle even though they were given billions of bailout dollars. You would think they could build something compelling with all that money, but nope still pushing mediocre vehicles down the assembly line. The Cruze is a far better effort then the Cavalier or Cobalt were, but compared to the rest of the cars in the compact class it is towards the bottom and long term reliability remains to be seen. Most GM vehicles in the past do not age well.

With that said, if you did want a small American car then I would look at the new Ford Focus or the all new midsize Fusion. I love the fact that the new Fusion looks like an Aston Martin and the Ecoboost engines have good performance for being fuel misers.

Now Toyota and Honda are always good choices so if you decide to go that way you would not be making a mistake.

I say save and buy a better car honestly, or get an older car instead of a 2012/2013 look at a 2010/2011

Top 3 of what? Toyota, Lexus & Scion are the same company ;)

If I was you TS and I could choose, I would go either Honda, Toyota, or Mitsubishi.

I'd be a little leery of purchasing a Mitsubishi product right now. Suzuki has announced it is leaving the U.S. market and many believe that Mitsubishi might be next. Of course this is just speculation, but it has been going on for quite some time.

Then I think it's a bad move to base the decision from the two cars in the OP based on wanting to go fast.

Have you test driven other cars like the Accord?

Why not an Acura RSX?

I want a car that's fun to drive. I am a car guy. I love them. It doesn't need to be fast in order to be fun. Take my car vs the previous gen Camry. Sure my Saturn Aura isn't the best to drive and it is just another family sedan, both have roughly the same power out of their V6's, etc. But, my car is much more enjoyable to drive. The suspension is firmer, the steering is better, etc. When I drove the Camry, the steering was beyond numb, the suspension floats, etc. It was the most boring car I have ever driven.

Accord is decent to drive, but styling is dreadful. The 2013 suffers from 2012 Civic syndrome, and as mentioned gutless below 5000 RPM.

Acura= Honda so no. Plus, they are wannabe luxury. ;)

Funny how you degrade GM for their past and yet Ford had the same bad past.

My family has owned four GM vehicles. A 1996 Suburban, 2002 Suburban, 2006 Equinox, and my car a 2007 Saturn Aura. The Suburbans are bulletproof. The 2002 Suburban has 90,000 miles and is 11 years old with just regular maintenance done. The 2006 Equinox is 7 years old now with over 110,000 miles. It came with one factory defect( which took 3 dealers trips to correctly diagnose, but that is the dealers fault not GM's) and the fan control unit broke at around 60,000 miles. Other than those minor things, solid as a rock. My Aura is 6 years old with 30,000 miles. So far everything solid.

What do you mean by "better"? Bigger, more expensive, lower MPG?

Well what do you really want out of a car? If you're just trying to go fast, frankly, that's a waste of money, just buy a motorcycle. Or actually break the speed limit.

And "better" may be more expensive, lower MPG, but a much larger engine, better features, etc....

And I mean better economical in terms of older cars. You could probably get the exact same car that you listed (either) with a 2010 or 2011 model much cheaper with the same or better features.

And I mean better in terms of an actual better car than either of the two you listed if you save more or extend your budget.

Get the exact car you want, and know you're going to have it for awhile. Don't settle. If you're having trouble between picking two cars "in your price range" you're doing it wrong. IMO.

Sorry if that post was confusing. Lots of thoughts at once.

Everyone has a price range. Going into buying a car and just saying 'this is what i want, regardless of what it costs, i'll just save until I can afford it' is dumb (imo)

I never mentioned anywhere that I want to go fast, I want a comfortable car with the options that I can get in those two cars for example, get good gas milage and that I can get OTD for around 25K. I don't think I have the wrong mindset going into purchasing this.

Meh, I disagree. I like the look quite a bit. To each their own.

and as mentioned gutless below 5000 RPM.

May or may not be true, but I guess that goes into the whole being suckered into a sports sedan.

Acura= Honda so no.

RSX is a cult classic. Idk what the Acura = Honda thing means though. Just stating a fact?

Plus, they are wannabe luxury. ;)

Eh, depends. They are on the same plane as Lexus in the whole faux luxury bit. Also depends on how you define luxury.

This. Settle on price, not features.

I just bought a car on Friday, and in my research, I was planning to settle on features - but I found something that had everything I wanted - so I didn't have to settle (except on price, it was about $1,000 more than I planned on paying, but not out of my range).

I've settled in the past, and it sucks, because you're stuck with something you aren't truly happy with - and it's something you'll likely spend a lot of time in.

BTW, have you looked at the Kia Optima?

This. Settle on price, not features.

These two cars have just about EVERY feature that I am currently looking for in a car so in no way am I settling on those. In my price range, those two have everything that I want in a car right now.

Well, I guess that's the difference here. I don't get why you wouldn't just save up and buy something you really want. Especially when it comes to a car you're going to spend a ton of time in.

Sorry I must have gotten confused somewhere with the fast thing. Maybe it's the whole Mazda thing. Everybody I've ever met who has purchased a Mazda has done it on the basis of trying to buy a poor mans performance car or whatever.

If you're looking for a comfortable car with good gas milage and all that jazz, get a Honda or Toyota or something. But I have to continue to strongly emphasize saving, waiting, and being patient if you can and REALLY buying something you're going to love getting in every day.

If you think those two vehicles fit that, than by all means. It just sounds like you're torn, and to me that means don't do it.

I'm sorry for giving you the impression that these wouldn't be cars that I want. Of course I could save and buy something more expensive with a bigger engine, more options, etc., but saving up wouldn't get me anything more that I want at this point.

It's true. That is Honda's VTEC system. Hence all the, " VTEC just kicked in yo" memes. I driven Civic, Accord, and my aunt's Acura TL. My aunt's TL V6 has about 280 HP I believe. Below 5,000 RPM, it doesn't feel like it is a 280 HP V6, but a 170 HP I4. Above 5,000 RPM, the engine comes to life and you finally get the sense of the engines power. It's been the like that for every other Honda/Acura I have ever driven.

They are decent to drive. But, the sucky engine kills it for me.

RSX is a cult classic. Idk what the Acura = Honda thing means though. Just stating a fact?

Acura is Honda's "luxury" brand.

Eh, depends. They are on the same plane as Lexus in the whole faux luxury bit. Also depends on how you define luxury.

Lexus is higher than Acura. They are luxury. Especially with the IS, GS, and LS. Acura is more at the Buick, Volvo, Saab, etc level.

Well yeah, I just don't understand why you were saying that.

Ah, weird. I consider Lexus and Acura to be pretty much on the same tier. Haven't really seen anything across the board to make me think that Lexus is more luxurious than Acura, let alone many other car brands.

Now this isn't saying that they don't make great cars or anything, it's just been my impression.

I think most would agree with you.
