I am bookmarking this page. Will come back in 60 days and every 30 days thereafter. We will all see for ourselves.

As far as price changes, once a new model/style is released Apple will sometimes adjust prices. However, it does not increase prices with each speed bump update that is not a new model but rather the internal components change. I fully expect to have the aluminum unibody MB and MBP for three to five years. The CPU will change, the battery may change, the RAM may change, often the dedicated graphics memory changes, and etc.

Let's all come back in 60 days and every 30 days after and see if it takes Apple 11.5 months for a speed bump update. And if it does wait 11.5 months to update the internals of MB and MBP, let's see what has happened to the sales of MB and MBPs.

Thats seems interesting. Out of curiosity- Why?

Thanks!

Large purchases are going to be affected by the currency fluctuations going on in our especially messed up world economy right now. I know we've seen some vendors raise prices and some cancel expected drops where I work. It's harder for h/w vendors to absorb price fluctuations on custom builds for business than it is to absorb price fluctuations on stuff targetted to home users imho. It'll trickle down though in the end I think - more in the case of "expected" cuts in price during product lifecycles not happening or being less than originally planned (again, you wouldn't notice that as a home user buying one box, but you would as a medium to large enterprise ordering 300 boxen with a custom spec that has to go back to the factory anyway).

True about currency conversion. Apple could raise prices against other currency to make sure the value is equivalent to the USD... like against the Pound. However, most of the time when I have checked, Apple charges most international sales at a much higher price when the currency is converted to the USD. In the US, the prices stay constant.

The price for a MBP has been $1999 and $2499 for three years (I don't know before that). The price of low-end MB has been $999 for three years... other prices were $1299 and $1499. When changed to unibody MB (a complete redesign and not just speed bump), the prices were raised $100, but if you compare getting aluminum versus plastic, the reason is obvious. So, the low-end stayed the same at $999, and aluminum is now $1299 and $1599. However, I would say the low-end is the barrier to buy, and that has stayed the same. Especially if you base it on the plastic MB which has had its internal components substantially improved for the same $999.

The whole point I feel about the pricing, is that if you buy a new MB today for $1299, you are getting the exact same MB that you could have bought four-and-a-half months ago for $1299. So, it's always better to buy as close to the day after the release date with this pricing model.

The price of technology components USUALLY drops drastically especially over six months. So, pulling a random number out of my a$$, let's say it cost $700 for all of the components Apple uses to build at introduction. The cost may drop by $200+ over six months. So, Apple has to be making MORE AND MORE money until it updates the components again.

That means the buyer gets a better value by buying the MB as close to the release date (after not before) as possible. Look at the MacMini, the dang thing has to be nearly free for Apple to make now, but that wasn't the case when it was released. Also, look at how the sales have dropped in all of Apple's desktops. Let's say you're buying a Mac Pro, would you really drop $5k on a Mac Pro right now when you can get newer technology by waiting a few months until Apple updates it? It's the exact same thing with the MB only on a much smaller scale.

Plus, we have seen some new technologies introduced since the MB and 15" MBPs were introduced. Like the new battery in the 17" MBP, maybe Apple will add that technology to the MB??? It's possible. 8 GB RAM??? Ok, doubtful. Maybe Apple will re-add FireWire since the level of complaining was unbelievable - if it will ever happen again, it will be on its next release... So price alone is not the only reason to wait since it has already been 4.5 months since the last MB was released. For 15" MBP buyers, they definitely should consider waiting, as the battery is a definite possibility along with probably 8 GB RAM option, and perhaps most importantly for many an anti-glare display.

Waiting right now could pay off, or it could be a complete waste of time if the MBs and MBPs are not speed bump and BTO option updated soon or there are no changes other than minor speed bump updates. I definitely think Apple will update the 15" MBPs to have the same speed CPUs as the 17" model and likely have more BTO options like anti-glare, higher capacity SSD, and 8 GB RAM.

So True, Apple starts milking their products towards the end of the life cycle holding prices up, as as opposed to say dell or HP who review their prices almost every couple of weeks. Im guessing a DELL laptop outfitted to the same specs as the $1299 MB would cost less then half the price, with more RAM. No wonder apple is so profitable. Attribute it to phenomenal brand equity!

Talking about updates,I don't think we're going to see FireWire on the Unibody MB any time soon - At least for the next year and a half. If theres an update around the corner, Its gonna be a spec bump (RAM, processor speed, HDD).

Actually, I just specced it out (as many have done before), and it comes to within $200 of the MacBook. Granted, larger drive and more RAM, so a bit of a gap there, but you miss out on the features of the MacBook too, like the new trackpad, the MagSafe cord, and the lack of viruses. (Lots of others I didn't mentioned, and of course there's OS X.) Really not that big of a deal, and Apple's aluminum casing probably makes up a good portion of the price differential as well.

If it happens, it will be in the first revision most likely, or else it will wait for the next total redesign. This has been pointed out before.

If you can wait, then you don't need a computer. If you don't need a computer, then what are you waiting for?

But you get what you pay for. Many people buy Macs for the OS, so comparing it to other laptops is not really valid. Also, the aluminium build quality of the MacBooks is worth much more than double the price compared to a Dell or HP.

Well, dont use the HP/DELL website to spec it out, check the market prices of their laptops on deal websites (deals2buy, etc). They have dozens of promotions running every week. This week, amongst other deals, theres a HP pavilion which compares pretty well with the MB, it doesnt have DDR3 ram, but it does make up for it with a BLURAY drive (Seriously, on a $700 laptop- and Steve & co complain that "blue ray is a big bag of hurt" (Read:its too expensive to license)), fingerprint reader, more ram and bigger HDD. And it costs $600 less than the MB. Gotta admit that the mac book adds significant value with the Alu enclosure and OS X, but were talking components here, and im guessing HP and dell spend as much or more than apple on their compoents for a lower priced machine.

Looks like we only had to wait 5 days! But what's up with the "NEW" 2.4?!

LOL! :D

Looks like they updated just about everything on the website...

LMAO!

Some people know it ALL!

Not only did we get changes to the Mac Pro, Mac mini, and iMac, we even got the changes to the 15" MBP! AND MORE!

Not only did it happen before July, it was only a few days after Kastenbrust announced so absolute... some people know it all, or so they think.

Win

yup, I waited..and i guess that was the right thing to do.

Got the MBP13 - I saved $100 comapred to the Alu MB, Got a free ipod and way better specs!
