Pro Tip whatever you do, don't by from retailers except for Apple. Since they will be retailer flex locked. They sim lock to the first sim card inserted / used.
You probably know this, but Apple doesn't ship to a different country besides the one the store is located in.
You would have to use a freight forwarder, but even that is getting increasingly difficult as Apple apparently maintains a blacklist of forwarding addresses these guys use. I looked into this when I wanted to order a MacBook with a different keyboard language that wasn't available locally, and decided it was simply too much hassle, risk and cost.
Of course, if you know someone trustworthy in the US, you can use their address and get them to send it on to you via courier.
Thanks. Im originally from the states so will be moving back eventually and want to keep my phone so I do have a backup address I can use. I was just wondering if the guts would be different or the same. It looks like everything is the same except for the mmwave. 🙂

It's up to you of course, but I think you will be better off financially buying a local Aussie phone and selling it before you move back.
If you want to ship a US phone to Australia, you'll have to pay local US sales tax and courier charges plus you may have to pay GST and import duty because the value will be over AUD $1,000. It's pretty difficult to understand what you will be charged when it arrives in Oz - I called the ABF and they wouldn't even answer it and suggested I needed to work with a customs broker to find out. It was just too much hassle, so I gave up eventually...
