At least it's only $29.00 to replace the keyboard if something gets spilled or if too much grit renders it unusable.

Is this the MB or the MBP keyboard?

Edit - sorry, just realized you were talking about the external.

Mb + Dyi Pc

So... when (not if  ) Apple gives me a new C2D MBP, I am thinking about simply selling (or returning) it and taking the $2000+ to buy a baseline MB as my life (or iLife) machine and a 17" iMac as my work (FCP) machine.

I'd rather have a 20", but what matters most is the GFX card being as or more powerful than my MBP, plus I am already gaining 2" over my 15.4" MBP! :D

Thoughts? Suggestions? Spam?
I read what everyone has said so far, and IMHO you should get the following combo: MB and a custom built PC tower with UltraSharp 2007FP 20 inch Black Flat Panel Monitor ($359.00)

A PC tower gives you the flexibility to install OSX while giving you the opportunity to upgrade at your own pace.

A motherboard that supports ECC Ram gigabit ethernet, Quad core CPU, nice graphics card, and fast SATA. You can have it for around 1500 bucks or less depending on your budget. Plus, you can upgrade as you go along.

OSX runs on PCs after a few tweaks. If I had a budget of around 3k, and enough room to keep my computers (unfortunately I'm in nyc) I'd go this route.

As I just posted in a related thread, some people simply do not grasp
the idea that using a computer can be trouble free without all the hassles.

It's bad enough dealing with Windows issues on a system meant to run Windows.

I continually hear people say they can build their own system so much " cheaper " and their system is almost never reliable.

Only way I could was when the refurbs hit the apple store a week or so ago... ;) Now, need to get some additional RAM and then upgrade the video card some day too...

At least you got yourself into the right machine.

Adding RAM is just a matter of setting aside some of your mad money.

Upgrading the GPU only matters if you are doing something that really requires the extra VRAM or if you plan to add a second large display.

You already have a system ahead of the available UB software in several cases, so it should be a long and happy relationship.

I started out with an iBook 20 months ago, just a little 12" incher. Limited power and small HD led me to upgrade my desktop from a PC to a 20" iMac.

I recently sold the iBook to a needy college student, and have just started to realize just how much I used it, and how much I miss it. (even if just for surfing on the couch).

The iMac is the quintessential desktop - for serious work, storage and iTunes basecamp. Come next year when Leopard and iLife '07 are released, I'll pick up a new MacBook or Pro... if only I can hold off until then :)

Most people use their laptops for convenience more than for raw desktop replacement performance.

Checking e-mail, surfing, shopping and working on reports and presentations on the road.

Just about any laptop can handle those needs.

It's when you really need a full desktop replacement notebook that you
end up paying quite a premium for that extra performance on the go.

I personally like knowing that all my critical data is safe here at home on my desktop with my 24" display.

I want a MacBook strictly for the convenience of being able to
access broadband away from home where I'm stuck on dial-up.

For that, a 12" iBook 1.33 or a 12" PB would be more than enough.

I'd go for the iMac and MacBook over the MBP. The MacBook's a nice size and isn't too heavy and although I use a laptop as my primary machine at home, I just feel more comfortable using a desktop for serious work for prolonged periods.

I wouldn't buy two new computers at the same time unless you have two people using them. If you buy two then one will end up being the one that you use most of the time. Thus neglecting a brand new machine. The idea is nice to have two brand new machines, and if you have the money then do it. But I wouldn't get two brand new machines, becuase I know that I would use one more than the other, then I would be wasting money. I say get one machine now, then get another next year when new OS is out and maybe an updated machine with new design ect. Just my thoughts.

Apple has finally agreed to send me a 2.16 C2d MBP w/ a 200GB HDD. I am keeping it. :D

My original plan to sell it and get a MB and then an iMac after MWSF went out the window and my new plan is to wait 'till santa rosa (or later ;) ) and sell my MBP at a small loss in one year. Then I will get a MB/iMac setup of my dreams. :D

I have had my buggy MBP for a year, and it goes by so fast. This way I get three consecutive years of new tech instead of just one.  :D

Boxer, where in overland park are you?
