Since my macbook and imac are 10 years old they barely can play or edit any of the 4k footage my iphone 8 plus shoots. I'm hoping to purchase something this fall when the new macs come out. In the meantime, can anyone recommend a cheap option do to very minor video editing to 4k footage from my iphone. I could be interested in a cheap chromebook to run linux on it or maybe a budget priced android tablet with an open sourced video editor. I realize my iphone could do some of these things but the screen size is a little too small.

Can you download any video editor on your Mac computer? As far as I know, there are many options available. iMovie for mac is easy to use and have the basic video editing function. Have a try.

The problem with the OP is that the hardware is too old to handle 4K video. No software will be possible to edit 4K on a Core Duo Mac.

You can buy a used 2017 iPad and use iMovie on it to. 4K requires powerful hardware and cheap chrome books just don't have the horsepower to handle it.

OP:

"Ten year old" hardware is just ... too old for 4k.

I'd suggest 1080p until you have Mac hardware new enough to handle the demands of 4k video...
