I have concluded that I am not interested in any carrier incentives for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that I have no need for an unlimited data plan, even if the carrier is willing to give me monthly billing credits. If you do the math, including the net monthly cost of the phone, over 30 months (AT&T for instance), there is a significant increase in total overall cost.

Here is my question....if I buy directly from Apple, and not through, say AT&T, does that mean I get a phone that is unlocked, and I merely take the SIM card out of my 6s Plus and put it into the 12, register at AT&T and off I go?

Next time , do the search first , everything about unlocked has been posted by Apple on their website , Apple Store App !

ONLY AT&T INSTALLMENT PLAN WILL BE LOCKED ! THE REST OF ALL WILL BE UNLOCKED !

Well, that info is a bit incomplete as well as Verizon has 60-days locking policy upon activation.

yes ! 60 days locking policy of you buy a phone from Verizon - as of seller !

But when you buy Verizon with Apple , Apple is your seller , not Verizon , and that will be unlocked :)

Devices that you purchase from our retail partners are locked for 60 days after activation.
Searching Google, this is correct whether you buy from Apple or not.

you should be fine. I bought an unlocked 12 pro, threw my Verizon sim in it and it worked great.
