I do not rent movies very often. The main use of the ATV2 will be playing ripped DVD's, especially kids DVD's.

Not having an ATV, my purpose of ripping DVD's was to get them onto the iPod (I have both a Classic and a Touch) so that I could then hook it to the on-board video system for family roadtrips.

    My usual procedure was:
    Rip disc with MTR4.
Convert for iTunes with handbrake using the iPod presets.

Now that I decided to get an ATV2, I did some testing and converted a couple movies with the ATV2 presets in handbrake. Those worked on iTunes and I assume will work on the ATV2. They do not work on the iPod, however.

    So, here are my questions:

    1. What is the best preset to use to so that the movies show on both the ATV2 and my iPod and still look good?

    2. My son watches a lot of Thomas the Tank Engine. Those discs contain multiple episodes. Previously, MTR4 would rip the disc and the iPod preset would convert it so that all episodes were in one file. It is my understanding that for use with the ATV2, I want to convert each episode separately. Am I correct on this?

    3. Assuming I'm correct on #2, I have a question on grouping. Props to P Mentior for suggesting iFlicks. I messed with that briefly last night and it appears to be great for tagging. But this leads to another question. It is my understanding that, as long as I tag properly, episodes will group on the ATV2 by season/disc and I won't have 40 separate episode files showing on screen. Is this correct?

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

PS: I don't know if it matters, but I'm actually buying two ATV2's. One will connect to a Samsung UN55C6400 55" 1080p LED and the other will connect to a Samsung UN40C5000 40" 1080p LED. I will be running iTunes on an iMac.

Feel free to mention anything else I should be aware of.

    1. You would probably be best off using Apple Universal preset if Apple TV doesn't play on your iPod.

    2. This is personal preference. The Apple TV will play individual episodes or one long file, it doesn't know how many shows there are. Most people prefer to have the individual episodes so they are easier to find.

The rip them individually, just select each episode in Handbrake, name them differently and add them to the queue.

The only way that I can imagine that you ended up with one long file is if this is an option of the DVD (play all episodes). If that is the case then just make sure you select the shorter shows in Handbrake.

    3. If you tag the items correctly then they will show up in Apple TV by season, with all shows grouped in each season.
