Okay, I've finally got sick of waiting for the iPad launch in New Zealand and I'm fortunate enough to be travelling to Australia in around two weeks.

I gather that stock levels in Apple retail stores over there are probably still extremely limited, so I'm wondering if it would be feasible to place an order for one now in the hope that it will be ready for me to go and pick up when I'm over there.

Is this possible to do? Are there potential warranty pitfalls associated with buying overseas, or would it be covered by an international warranty?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't think they do pickup orders online here in Australia.

Your best best would be to ring around all the stores that stock them in the city you're visiting and pick one up on the day. I know JB HiFi, Myer, David Jones, Dick Smith and Apple all sell them. Check the websites for these companies for store locations and contact details.

Some models are in short supply so you might find it hard to find one in stock.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. I will be staying in the Melbourne CBD, but can probably travel out a bit if I need to.

I was under the impression that the Apple stores had waiting lists but whether they would take a request over the phone I'm not sure. I guess wouldn't hurt to give them a call and ask.

I was hoping to get onto a waiting list a week or two in advance of coming over as I'm conscious of the fact that supplies are still very tight, but failing that I'll definitely have a hunt around when I get there in the hope that somone will have stock of the 32Gb 3G model which is what I'm looking for.

The Sydney duty free store had a 20% off deal last week. Melbourne may have the same.

As far as I know First Duty Free is the only duty free shop at Melbourne Airport and they don't appear to have iPads listed on their web site.

Duty free websites and notoriously bad. Have a look when you to their. Otherwise jb's is probably your best bet.

    Thanks everyone for your comments.

It sounds like the best bet is to try to reserve one before I get there, failing that check the duty free stores on the way through, and failing that there's a reasonable chance that JB or similar will have what I want in stock anyway.

I will definitely claim back the Australian GST on departure as I will probably get stung for NZ GST by customs here on the way back through.
