Hi

My son is turning 16 in about a month and I thought I'd surprise him with an iPhone 13 to replace his current iPhone 8. I went on the Apple website, ordered one, and ultimately had to sign in to my personal AppleID to complete the checkout process as I figured that asking him for his AppleID logins would ruin the surprise. My question now is if this would mess things up somehow? Would the phone be automatically linked to my AppleID? I'm not the most technologically minded and would appreciate all the help I can get! Thanks!

Well that's a relief—was quite worried that the phone would come shipped linked to my AppleID or that the serial number (?) would be registered to my name/AppleID and it'd be a pain transferring ownership of the phone to him. I think he'd appreciate being able to set up the phone as if he'd bought it brand new from the Apple Store himself and having it registered under my AppleID would probably be quite the nightmare! Thanks for the reply, Regina!

@Regina del Mare is correct. The phone will get linked to your son's appleId when he goes through the set up process. Upon purchase, the phone is linked to no appleId. I buy my wife's phones with my appleId and this has never been an issue.
