Buying iPhone 3G on Craigslist

Does anyone have any advice for buying an iPhone on craigslist? There are some good deals on craigslist right now. At least good deals to me since I am not upgrade eligible.

If I purchase an iPhone and something is wrong with it, is the warranty still valid?

so if I purchase the iPhone used, add it to my ATT account, I still have no warranty protection?
