Just a silly question I need an answer for.

If I go to the apple store to get an iPhone today and they switch my number from my current 4s to the new 5, does the process actually involve them every needing to physically look at my jailbroken 4s?

I've never bought an iPhone through apple, but I was informed by the Verizon store employees if I'm buying it off contract for full price that I have to buy it straight from apple and I'm hesitant because my phone is obviously jailbroken lol

It won't matter. You are buying a new phone and not trying to get a warranty replacement on your 4s. If you we're trying to replace your 4s they would probably tell you that the jailbreak voided your warranty. But since you are just buying a new phone it doesn't matter. You are allowed to jailbreak your phone if you want to. Apple just won't replace your phone for free if you break it.

Edit: Oops I didn't even answer your question. They shouldn't even look at your 4s. When you buy from apple they usually just give you your new phone in the box. It's up to you to get it set up. Unless you ask them for help or something.

I don't think that they will need to see the iPhone . If they ask to see it just tell that it was lost/stolen thats why youre buying the 5.

Why would he have to lie for no reason? Don't advertise people to lie out of fear, that's not a good practice... Jus sayin

Apple doesn't care unless it is warranty related or you are asking for help from Genius Bar on why your phone isn't acting correct. In that case they immediately go to "because its jailbroken" which is often the case..

Okay I'm trying to buy my phone on the Verizon site to save me a four hour round trip to the apple store.

This Verizon rep I'm chatting with said there's no way I can get unlimited data on the iPhone 5 because its not compatible.

This is complete ********, right?

If you have an unlimited plan now with Verizon, you can transfer that number to the new phone no issues.

I did just that back in December, you will have to pay full price for the iPhone 5. Just buy it from the apple website and cut of Verizon all together.

Well I went ahead and went to the apple store and bought the phone. The apple sales rep said I should have no problems activating the new phone under my number and keeping my unlimited data. I sure hope so. If not, then I'm out $916.92 lol

Yes, that's been well known for a long time now with verizon unlimited plans.
If you get it subsidized Verizon wont let you keep your unlimited data plan.
You can either get it full price and keep your unlimited data plan or use someone elses line to get the upgrade price and then transfer the new iphone to your line and you will still get to keep your unlimited plan.

She said even if I pay full price the unlimited data couldn't be kept, I'd still have to upgrade to a tiered data plan.

I transferred my upgrade to a different line so the site showed that I was no longer eligible for an upgrade so it would force me to pay full price and added it to my cart and it did in fact say at the end that my data plan was not compatible.

So I just went to the apple store and bought the device with my credit card so I can pay for it over my next few paychecks. I refuse to change my plan and sign another two year contract.

But can you believe that Verizon rep said she doesn't recommend buying from apple, eBay or Craigslist because they're unauthorized resellers and then Verizon can't help me with any technical difficulties I have or warranty issues? I wanted to tell her she was full of ****. How is buying an APPLE IPHONE from APPLE considered buying it from an unauthorized reseller???? Such crap.

Now I have to wait 68 hours to download an almost 1gb software update lol at this rate i might be able to use my phone by saturday or sunday! haha. I hate Verizon and I hate living in the middle of the damn desert in an Internet black hole. I might be spending my lunch break in Starbucks tomorrow trying to download the software on my 4s so I can transfer it over to my computer tomorrow night. That's what I had to do with the 6.1 update for the 4s. So pathetic lol

I can see how they suggest not to buy from ebay or CL but they told you not to buy from Apple either:D They're crazy.
Glad you got to keep your unlimited data plan in the end. Im also on unlimited and will never switched to a tired plan.
Yes, hit up a fast wifi somewhere if you can. It would suck having to wait 3 days for an ipsw. Good luck bro:)

Well I'm not in the clear yet. I haven't activated it, I'm waiting to have 6.1.2 on it and jail broken before I activate it. I couldn't possibly go without it being jailbroken until I can download the stupid software haha

I have been jailbroken since August 2010, not a day gone by unjailbroken, that would just be..... terrible.

United States is one of the few places that it is still LEGAL for a data/cell company that can still sell you the TOTAL scam of non unlimited plans for cell phones.

In many European countries and even Canada the customers are protected by legislation from this bogus ****..

In Denmark I can buy up to 10 gbs of 3G data For 60$ American, with rollover. USA is the only place where cell companies can eff you in your A you sooo hard.

Total scammers, tell this to there face too. and then leave a dump on your sales reps car

It amazes me how little some Apple store guys care about looking at the phone. I went in last week wanting to purchase Applecare+. I had bought the phone at Verizon a few days previously, and read on here and other sites that you wouldn't be able to purchase Applecare+ online because the sales rep has to look at your phone to see if there is any physical damage before putting the care plan on it, which makes perfect sense. I mean, they're not going to sell Applecare+ on a device that is clearly damaged, fine.

So I unjailbroke, restored it to new, took it in to the apple store, and the guy asked me to give him the serial number from my device. Never even touched the thing. I was all ready to take off the case and have him inspect it, but he never asked for the phone. I went into settings, read him off the serial number, and he said, "Yep, checks out, just swipe here". I swiped my card, and all was well.

Worried over nothing.

wow, someone is worked up.

Not really, just making expressing something in a way that I found humorous :)

I think it's quite stupid in reality though how data is more or less price fixed.

And if you don't think so, then I guess we have different interests in the pursuit of fairness of the dollar. Which is cool :)

I think I agree with you. But being on an unlimited plan with Verizon, who doesn't care if you tether or not, I haven't really thought about it!

Sorry for all the little dumb questions, but I have another one....

Can I switch my devices online and be absolutely sure it will not switch my data plan? Or is this something I need to do in store?
