Hi,

I am visiting New York in late May from Belgium (Where the iPhone has been sold out for months). Does anyone one know if it is possible to buy an iPhone from the Apple Retail store without signing up for a contract?

Many thanks!

Not possible in store. Need a contract.

You can try craigslist, but do your own research.
Don't buy a stolen one (no box, no charger, no cable) or a fake one.

As far as I know, you will need a contract to obtain an iPhone, unless you can get it someplace like eBay or Craigslist.

Well supposedly AT&T is going to start selling them pretty soon without a contract. Other than that you might want to hit up Ebay.

You might want to check craigslist.com, and see if you can find one on there listed near the area of NY you will be visiting, that way when you're in town you can meet with someone and purchase your new tech. There are usually a ton of listings for Iphones, jailbroken and regular, on there.

It says on the main macrumors page that apple retail stores are selling contract free iphones.
