Buying iphone without any connections to an operator

Hello.

Is it possible for me who is on vacation in New Hampshire to buy a clean iPhone without any subscription at all and how much would that cost?
 
you'll probably have to purchase on ebay or craigslist. Even if you pay the $599/699 no-contact price, I still think they make you activate it on AT&T before you leave the store.
