It's usable but it definitely doesn't perform as well as the app on my phone. I'm not developing a game so I can't tell what that would be like.

It isn't stressing the macbook, I use it closed and it barely gets warm. The macbook pro I was using previously used to get hotter, the battery life was worse and I don't yearn for it at all.

I have now had several computers with ~250GB of storage, and it's not an issue assuming you're not trying to dump all your media on one machine. This is a bad strategy in general. An external drive/NAS/etc. is always going to be a cheaper/more efficient way to store your "downloaded HD movies". For media storage, you're grossly overpaying Apple's SSD upgrade premium when you're just stashing you bootleg Deadpool movie torrent.

I do keep everything on one machine. Why the heck would I want more than ONE computer? I seriously would not want to have to connect a external drive to my macbook whenever I want to homeshare my library to a Apple TV. How inconvenient. I want everything in one place. Why make life more complicated when you are busy with a thousand other interests? I seriously don't understand why people need more than one computer but each to their own I guess :)

Hmm what if you have more than 512gb of data or you're worried about losing your device and its contents? Is that difficult to understand?

Once you get to that point, life is much nicer if you have NAS/Cloud storage and then your devices are just clients and storage space doesn't really matter. I guess it depends what you're doing with your laptop.

Same reason I have more than one pair of shoes?

I got the m7 for my girlfriend as well. With the Student discount the difference isn't that big and if you are thinking on keeping this computer for the next 4-6 years, you would wish you had upgraded it.

Difference between M3 vs M5/M7 is noticeable.

Difference between M5 vs M7 is very marginal depending on what you do. For long running tasks they are about even due to throttling, but for short burst type stuff like loading webpages or single raw image in Lightroom the difference is much bigger. Basically, it will feel more snappier shaving a few seconds off.
Interesting. That basically validates my initial comment to the OP.

I had the 2015 "m5" and upgraded to the 2016 m7. From my anecdotal experience, the 2016 doesn't seem to throttle as much, but I don't have any specific tests, and I'm guessing most of that is from the move to Skylake.

Im coming from a mbp 2010 with 256gb storage, and isn't half full. Everything I do is streaming, spotify and series.

I have never been into photoshop or anything like that. In the future when I start to work I will have a computer through the job. I need a computer that can do what I describe and in the future it will be just a surf on the couch and traveling buddy. The only thing thats bugging me is "will it be a insane mbp in september with a redesign". I don't think I will use the extra power or extra port. Its just the feeling to buy something old, I knew that they are different computers with different customer groups. Its always fun with new technology.

Okey, won't even notice the extra processor?

Dont handle that big excel files, its more company valuation and school stuff.

I also have one more concern, is 8gb future proof (3-4years)? It feels like 8gb won't be enough in the future, new macOS etc. Have a friend that complaining about his Air is lagging when he updates to the latest OS.

As noted before as your requirements are quite modest and you are obviously struck with the rMB yet concerned with a possible new future devices (rMBP Q4 and beyond)

You would seem a classic case to buy a year old rMB 2015 with a 2 year AppleCare at considerable savings, then trade up in 2 years time with a similar 1 year old (ie 2017 rMB or rMBP) at probably the same cost as if you bought a shiny new 2016 rMB. now.

This way not only will you stay more current but you will have complete warranty support etc. Ok it won't be a virgin device but with Applecare your covered and you probably will get a slightly better spec than you would of otherwise considered and all your other concerns are covered :)

PS The Excel comments were related to another user who noted large files
