But after hunting online for an answer, it's become clear to me that the answer depends on where you live.
For various reasons, Apple doesn't sell the same optional warranty products in every country where it sells hardware. Different countries/regions get different products. And to confuse matters, customers often refer to all of the various products as "AppleCare" as though there's only one specific product being sold worldwide.
You haven't said where you live, but wherever it is, you should ask your local Apple store for a possibly more reliable answer.
I highly doubt that you will have to pay taxes on electronics purchased abroad, they don't even check your luggage anymore unless a scan shows something illegal.
