I just want a 15" laptop. But if I get a retina I know I'll be overpaying. Especially for a 750gb SSD. If I go with a non-retina, I'm spending $2000 on outdated hardware.

I just want a work computer that isn't ridiculously overpriced or outdated.

Have you tried using a different cable? Some cables can be pretty finicky, they'll work one minute and not the next. They might work with one machine, but not another. Maybe you could borrow one? Good luck!

Oh, wouldn't that be embarrassing if that were the case! I know. It's happened to me. Cables be the curse! You check everything and not even think of a cable being the culprit.

Well, funny you should mention that. I got one from Work recently, and I've seriously been considering just using that for everything. There's no reason to spend thoudands of dollars on something I'm not going to be 100% happy with, so I'll buy a metric ton of beer and use a big ol' Latitude instead.
