Buying sim free iPhone X at Apple store

Can one walk in and buy unlocked (sim free) at Apple stores in the US yet?

If not, which model should I buy to be GSM/LTE compatible worldwide?

This is almost one of those “can” vs “may” questions with which my mom had such fun when I was a toddler and grammar mattered.

You “can” buy simfree per policy at Apple Store, which “may” have 1–literally 1 at my store— in stock.
