You can't cancel the data plan, it's a "must have" item with an iPhone purchase.

I think you have to wait 30 days to sell them, meaning you can cancel the iPhone voice/data plan after 30 days and stick your SIM in another cheaper phone.

You just need to call AT&T and tell them that line isn't using an iPhone anymore.

Put the iPhone SIM into a cheaper phone, and read them the IMEI of that.

BAM, no more $30/mo :]

I'm pretty sure AT&T would be a bit suspicious of calls within a day of purchase to say the line isn't using an iPhone any longer after just havign signed a new 2yr contract. :)

Sure you can say it's stolen and I'm sure AT&T could accommodate, with a provided police report...

You just tell them you gave it to your brother or something.

I did it last night .

Lots of people have already done it, AT&T doesn't really care... there is nothing in the contract that says you MUST use the iPhone that you bought when you extended your contract. I called them and changed mine, no questions asked. Just tell them you're using a different phone, give IMEI, done.

the whole "OMG BE HONEST" meme has gone too far. there is NOTHING wrong with this.

i told my AT&T store manager that i would rather pay $240 over 2 years instead of $200 up front, so i wanted to open a new line to get the subsidized 3GS, immediately transfer that to my main line, and leave the 9.99$ line dormant. yeah, that's not what is "supposed to be" on the 9.99 line, but who cares? at&t doesn't.

Technically, it's a "must have" for iPhone usage. If you can unequivocally demonstrate the verifiable fact that you're not actually using an iPhone, you can turn off the data whenever you wish.

To put things in perspective, here in Canada Rogers charges a separate pro-rated ETF of $5 per month remaining in the contract to a maximum of $100 for cancelling any bundled data plan. (The voice plan has its own pro-rated ETF of $20 per month remaining in the contract to a maximum of $400.) Be glad you're dealing with AT&T.

no,, you are wrong

Thanks for all the info guys, i wouldn't have thought things were so complicated when seeing how many people are already selling Iphone 3GS on Ebay...

So i guess I'll swap the IMEI with another phone and then sell the phones.

What about activation though? I still dont get how it plays in the equation. Is it better to buy and activate or to order online and not activate?

"I hope it feels so good to be right. There's nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?"

just didnt have time to elaborate so I needed to be to the point and I wantd to mAke sure the correct info was out there

I wouldnt activate them if you dont have to you can probably get more money for them unopened

My conbcern is this: If I purchase an Iphone and I dont activate it within 30 days, i heard ATT is going to charge me the full unsubsidized price (599) instead of the subsidized one. Is that true?

One quick question, is it really worth all the effort you are putting into it and will be putting into it just to make a buck or two. Seems kind of crazy to me.

I understand where you;re coming from, but i dont think it will be that complicated. If you look at the thousands of Iphone 3GS from ATT on sale on ebay, how do they do it? I just want to make sure I'm doing things the right way.

What has it taken him? 20 minutes on posting and checking in a forum? Maybe 40 minutes to pick up the two phones, go through the AT&T process, and list them online. Another 30 maybe to package them up and bring them to a UPS store?

An hour and a half to make $1000-1400 in profit?

I wouldn't do it either buddy. Too much work for 'a buck or two'.

Good luck!

Don't they ship with a SIM card in it that has your phone number programmed, or no? How does that impact selling it with the SIM still inside?

I'm sure but reading this thread and the issues that are raised sure make sound complicated and the risk of being stuck with a data plan you dont need (posts saying you can and can't cancel).

Oh, I know about ebay and the volume of 3Gs there, heck I just sold my 3G there and I saw the volume/inventory of iPhones skyrocket.
