Hi all

I'm going to be buying a used iPad Pro 11" tomorrow from a private seller. I've checked the serial number and IMEIs and everything is fine on those ends, however, I've been out of the 'buying used Apple goods' game for a bit and am confused as to what locks I need to check out for? So far I've heard of these three locks that Apple puts onto it's devices, but not sure if some of them are the same:

  • iCloud Lock
  • Activation Lock
  • Find my iPhone/iPad lock
Can someone please inform me as to what locks I should be checking for. I think the iPad is in an out of box state. Should I try and set it up there and then? And if I can go through the setup process, does that mean there are no locks on the device?

Thanks

These are all names for Activation Lock and describe the same thing. Be sure to set it up on the spot (WiFi required). If Activation Lock is on then the iPad is still registered to the previous Apple ID.
Once you get to the home screen you are done with lock checking. But make sure you go through the entire setup process and put in YOUR Apple ID as part of that.

If it's a cellular device and on a contract, you'll want to check with the carrier to make sure it has been paid off. Otherwise, the device may be blacklisted if payment stops.

The three things you’ve listed are all the same thing and is in fact just Activation Lock.

Make sure they’ve turned off Find My iPad in the iCloud settings. You can tell if they have if when you set up the iPad it doesn’t ask for the password to sign in again to their iCloud account.

You should also ensure the iPad is not locked to a phone carrier if it’s the cellular version. You’ll be able to tell because cellular iPads have a dark rectangle on the back of the device.

To be safe, go through set up there with the seller to be sure.

Thanks guys. Yeah I'm buying it in person, and according to them, they've already reset it to an out of box state, so when it turns on, it says welcome.

Therefore am I right in thinking that if I do the full setup (as in connect to wifi, put in my iCloud account details, set up Face ID etc) and when I get to the home screen, does that mean the iPad has no form of activation/icloud/find my ipad lock on it?

Yeap you’re set, the only uncertainty remains is if it’s unlocked from a carrier network.
