Other C2 Modem?

I was wondering if the Qualcomm in the 18 PM is the X80 or X85. Nothing confirmed, but the Apple Wiki page states it's the X80:

Also, late Hune the schematics were revealed that were stolen from Tata. This article correctly stated the pro would be C2 others not, and it references the X80 in the bill of materials.

So not a full confirmation until someone tears it apart, but very possible it's the older X80. Ugh.

It’s odd but most people buying these wont be able to tell the difference anyway.

Do we know if apple is using x80 or x85 for the 18 Pro Max?
 
I am getting the Pro instead because of this. Some will call me a madman, perhaps so.

But I can’t shake the feeling that in the long run the Apple modem will only get better. And I can’t shake the image of someone rummaging around a spare parts pin and jamming this leftover older part in there that seems to be going away in a year. My reception has always sucked in my home, maybe this will give it a chance at improving.

No I don’t think you’re a madman; communication is the essence of a phone and there is a chance the C2 supports NR-NTN (5G satellite) connectivity; whether it is/will be enabled remains to be seen. At the least you will be getting a solid Apple designed chip hopefully as well designed as the M series processors.

  4. Dual physical SIM & eSIM, C2 (China)
Assuming two battery sizes (eSIM vs physical SIM), model 2 will be more efficient but 1 and 2 are listed with the same battery performance.

The 18 Pros are not listed on Apple's dual physical SIM list. I think Apple is not going to make any more dual physical SIM phones since eSIM is now an option in China. I'm sure eventually Apple wants to make all models globally eSIM only.

I'm a bit surprised that Apple isn't pushing forward more aggressively towards all models globally being eSIM only. Surely the cost savings must be well worth having in terms of only one PCB (once it's also using its own modems everywhere), not needing 2 versions of the chassis (one with SIM tray cutout and one without), not having the extra component and manufacturing complexity of putting in a SIM tray, being able to place a single bigger order for the same battery instead of splitting it across two fairly modestly different battery sizes, etc, etc, etc)? I was expecting at least more countries to be added to the list of eSIM-only Pro and Pro Max models this year.

Here in the UK I was really worried about that possibility when Apple first announced eSIM only models because my MVNO (and in fact pretty much all MVNOs in the UK) didn't offer an eSIM option at that time but now the market has all but caught up and if/when Apple does launch everything eSIM-only in the UK (the current Air being eSIM-only already of course) I'm pretty confident that the last hold-outs would respond very quickly, probably in time for launch if Apple started pre-briefings and deliberate leaks about its intentions in the year it happens.

I'm ready to go eSIM now and I wouldn't say no to a slightly bigger battery so I'm disappointed that, as well as it seems the UK not going to get the C2 modem in our latest Pro Max, we are also still stuck with the physical SIM slot model. I'd be really surprised though if next year's anniversary model with its rumoured redesign doesn't follow the iPhone Air precedent and go eSIM-only everywhere so I suppose what I wan't is now almost certainly only a year away and we'll almost certainly (my guess) also get what will probably be a C3 modem in it by then.
