I mean your MacBook Air, this should be booting normally, correct?

On your laptop, go to the Apple in the upper left, and select "About This Mac".

Then, press command+shift+4, and using your mouse drag the box selecting the "About This Mac" window, but leave out the Serial Number.

It will save to the desktop, and post it here, please.
 
Looks like you might be on to something here. Sold a 2017 model as current model in August 2019......criminal.

Yeah, I knew something was up.

In the future, you can check to see the model and specs of a Mac by using "About This Mac", to make sure you are buying what you think you are.

The 2017 MBA had Thunderbolt 2, so all you need to connect to the Mid 2011 is a Thunderbolt 1 or 2 cable.

So, getting back to your problem, you have the Mid 2011 in Target Display Mode? Do you see the iMac as an external drive on your desktop?
 
You can use disk utility and try to repair it. Is there anything important on the iMac drive that you do not have elsewhere?
 
Currently copying all relevant files to another HD, presume repair will not overwrite files and unless I reformat.
 
I can see that it is not that difficult to replace HDD in my imac. Only question I have is this, do I need a temperature sensor cable with a 2.5" SSd drive? Some youtube videos say yes others say no. Your help is greatle appreciated.
