OK, no disrespect intended. Your experiment was interesting, but not a wise choice.

I't OK, no disrespect taken. But with all due respect to you I fail to see why having my iTunes media on the T3 was not a wise choice; I have been running with the iTunes media external for years with no ill effects, and was looking to take advantage of the new technology on my new computer, just like many others here are doing. Moving the home folder external was not in my initial plan and was only a test that did not pan out.

Yeah, I was being a jerk - jumping on you like that. Blame it on the adult beverage ;)

BTW - Do you remember what the total size is striped Raid0? I have a client interested in the 6TB for scratch work.

Mine was a 3TB striped RAID0 array (3x1TB disks).

I have been using Caldigit at work for many years now. Numbers of my CD external drives have been running 24/7 for over 6 years without a hitch. When tech support is needed (if ever) it is second to none. Period. They are responsive and knowledgeable. In short , both their equipment and service are wonderful. A rare combination today. I will tell you that every piece of equipment they ship is tested by them before you get it. Probably one reason the reliability of their products is so high.
I am considering a T3 for myself and the new MacPro I just took delivery of. It will house my iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie files which I hardly ever use. It's real job will be to run
My Lightroom5 catalog and RAW data for PS CS6 CC. I figure that Thunderbolt is faster than any HDD Read/write and as I don't plan on doing any 4K work the T4s' T2 speed will not be necessary.
I do fine art photography so I rarely have more than 7 images open at a time so although I know LR would be almost instantaneous on my 512Gb SSD I would rather run only Application from the on-board drive.
I already have a VR2 which is great... But the T3 will be just what's needed. Still have not figured out how I want to set it up yet ... 2 RAID 1 with one JBOD to back it up?
Any suggestions?
By the way... The little MacPro is SWEEEET
Only the 4 core... But it screams and is totally silent.

I do NOT work for CalDigit

A 2 drive Raid0 should run well over TB. With 3, it's right in the ballpark of standard SSD speed. Guess you'll have to experiment and see. Some interesting tests here - http://macperformanceguide.com/Thunderbolt-CalDigit-T3.html

My friend is considering using a T3 as a Lightroom Work Drive. She already has 2 AV Pros, one with Raw Images and LR cat files. Instead of moving the cat folder to the system SSD, the discussion has been more about speeding up the external. The main reason is the redundant backup routine she likes (there are more 4TB trays)

3 of 4 different catalogs are well over 50,000 Raw, so the though of running at double the read/write is interesting for her situation. Much of the heavy lifting is still on the Mac, but it will be interesting to see what gains are to be had by switching the work drive from an AV Pro to a 3 drive Raid0. Obviously the AV Pros will make excellent backup drives & the trays match, so very flexible. The VR2 in jbod mode would make a great backup device as well.

The backups are 4TB each, and the T3 would be the 6TB version. No need to go larger than 4 & 6 right now. If she starts adding video, that's another story ;)
