It is still fundamentally the same app with some new features with an upgraded GUI. While it's called may have been completely rewritten, that does not necessarily make it a completely new app in my opinion. Well, still available as a one-time purchase, he is also made it into a subscription app as well. I'm fine with subscriptions for services but not for tools.

But serves me about the release of this app, which is now only available from the Apple Store, is that the developer had made no allowances for previous licensed users. He is treating everyone as new customers and they have to buy it at the new price even if they've been licensed users for many years.

He has also indicated that there are some basic functions that can be used without payment in the new app. However, I have no idea what they actually are as my initial look did not see any comparison tables. In any case might take on, this is being a very long-time user, as I'm gonna stick with my license version and not consider upgrading to the new version until it's been out for a while and most of the major bugs that are likely in it have been addressed. If I do upgrade, I'm not going to be very happy about it, considering he's abandoned the loyalty and the support he's had from previous customers.

Tried to look up the pricing on the website but could not find it. So I used AI with the following results:

macOS Pricing
For the Mac version, you can choose between a perpetual license or a subscription:
  • One-time Purchase (Lifetime): $49.99
  • Yearly Subscription: $19.99/year
  • Family Lifetime License: $69.99
  • Family Yearly Subscription: $29.99/year
iOS / iPadOS / watchOS Pricing
The mobile version is priced lower but generally requires a separate purchase from the Mac version:
  • One-time Purchase (Lifetime): $19.99
  • Family Lifetime License: $29.99
  • Monthly Subscription (Family): $4.99/month
So for the complete package as described in its marketing the cost for single purchase is now $70 for individual and $100 for family. $40 for 1st year then $20 after that for individual. For Family it is $90/year or $60 for first year and $30 following if you purchase lifetime mobile.

I liked the old 366 version and I definitely don't like what the developer did with removing . It's the same thing Fantastical did to their loyal pre-sub users, which I was one. I am not going to pay $20 a year for the new version when he has shown no appreciation for those of us who purchased the previous version.

Boooo!!

Was wondering about the icon changes in the latest/last update of the old app on i*OS.

Yeah, not going to spend $20/yr for a calendar app especially in the light of Apple's Calendar app is back to iOS 4 utility levels (aka. Calendars and Reminders are shown in Calendars app). Still not ideal for me since cannot STILL (19 years) add more than two alerts to Events but can work around that and or add the event on MacOS where one has been able to do that for ages now.

Like @jimw, tried to find anything about what the subscriptions buy me, nothing found. Not willingly to just do it blindly.

And even if there is a free version, whose to say more utility/functions get paywalled or whole app gets paywalled. Seen the feature lopping time and again.

From what I can see with the new version, he is offering the same pro features that Fantasticall is albeit much cheaper. I see the lifetime purchase is $20 for all devices minus Mac. To include Mac with the other devices is a one time $49.

Another really good and reasonably priced app getting greedy. Pi**es me off at the constant money grab by these guys. Can somebody explain WHY I need to pay somebody for all of eternity to access MY data?

Going to keep using the current version until I find something else.

I think the developer should have been open and forthright about the move to subscription, in addition to keeping the one time payment option. I also think he should have offered a discount on the new app for those of us already using the old version. He should have posted on the app website. He has faced some backlash on the App Store rating because he didn't bother communicating etc.

Granted, the one time price is a lot more than it was with the old app. At the same time, the developer has put a lot of work into the new version. I don't begrudge him trying to make a living. I just didn't like seeing him handle the situation like Fantastical did. In my opinion, if the developer is still updating and adding to the app in 5 years, the one time payment of $20 is a fair price.

wasn't the ios version a full app and the macos version a menu bar app which did my head in. Has that change to a full app now for macos?

i moved over to busycal due to the mac app being more awkward to use.

On iPhone/iPad, the new Calendars 366 app used the standard date picker interface instead of the scrolling date wheel picker, which by itself is a major UX improvement (but not really a major app update). Unfortunately, the user interface on iPhone/iPad has a LOT more padding/spacing compared to the old version. It's like going from the Gmail "Compact" view to the poorly name "Comfortable" view. In the old app, I can see 15 events without scrolling in the List view, but in the new app I can only see 8 events in the List view. The Month view has the same problem, although the month view in the old version wasn't much better. (My favorite calendar Month view is the one found in Informant.)

The menu bar calendar in the Mac version of the Calendar 366 has the same problem. In the old version I can see 6 events at a time, but in the new version I can only see 3. The new Calendar 366 has a full Mac calendar app, but it likewise suffers from too much padding/white space. I can only see 3 events for each date in the Month view, whereas the native Apple Calendar app shows 5 events for each date in Month view.

I want high information density and wan to be able to see as many calendar events in each view as possible. I've subscribed to Premium in the hope that supporting the developer will lead to improvements, but I can't see subscribing long term without improvements in those areas. Maybe if enough people reach out to the developer (support@calendar366.com), he'll add high information density view options.

I was using the free version of Calendar 366, seemingly now called "Calendar 366 Lite" when I search my installed apps, but it might no longer be available on the App Store if you hadn't downloaded it previously.

I upgraded to the new Calendar 366. At first, I much preferred it as the layout seems cleaner. However, I've reverted back to the original version for two main reasons:

1) The new version has no widget that lists the next few events. It only lists events for today (or, today and tomorrow if you pick that widget, but I don't like the layout). If you always have a few events each day then this omission won't bother you.

2) The agenda view, while having more customisation in the new version, doesn't fit in as much info. The old version shows the start time of each event. Also, the list views don't show as much as before. They've followed the trend for wasting space.
