When I had my iPhone 5 I would enter birthdays and important events in the Calendar. Under the iCloud settings the calendar option was ON, so I assumed my calendar events were being saved each time I did a backup to iCloud.

When I purchased my iPhone 6+, I restored from backup and none of the calendar events appeared on the new phone.

Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong that's preventing my calendar events from being backed up to iCloud?

Is the calendar option on in iCloud settings? Do you have more than one calendar account from your iPhone 5? If so, only thing I can think of is either it may have synced to another calendar service (based on the default calendar in iOS settings under mail/contacts/calendars), or the specific calendar is not enabled for showing.

When you activate the iCloud calendar, it is automatically synchronized according to the schedule configured under "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"/"Fetch New Data" (i.e. push, periodic fetch, or manual when you open the calendar). It works similar to email syncing. The option has nothing to do with iCloud backup.
They should automatically appear if you switch on the iCloud calendar option.
