Calendar: Change Default Alerts

I've turned birthday alerts on in Calendar, and the alert type is automatically set to "default." The problem is that I have no idea how to set the default behavior of alerts. Specifically, how do I set email as the default mode of alert? Thanks very much in advance to anybody who can answer this question for me.
