$18=upgrade fee (new phone for existing customer)
$36=activation fee (new account for new customer)

Both are rubbish, but what are you going to do? It's just a "hidden" charge, like paying to check luggage.

I agree they are both rubbish, but I don't think they are hidden. When I purchased mine the information I read about the plans and fees clearly stated the activation fee.

After I signed up I called and asked them to remove the fee and they did.

So was it fraud that AT&T charged me tax for an unsubsidized iphone when I bought one at the discounted price? Or how about them billing the month in advance and not telling me that when I purchased the phone? I agree; I lied to them to save $36 (almost a whole tank of gas) but they also lied to me in charging more tax and 2 months billing at once. Even if they didn't lie to me I would have no problem taking AT&T for a wopping $36 that they will never miss.:)

I hate people who never read the fine print on contracts and then claim they are being cheated. They are required by law to put all charges, overages, and other fees in writing. When you signed the contract, you agreed to all fees that were in writing somewhere on that contract. Just because you didn't read the fine print, doesn't mean they lied to you, they can't make you read a binding document when you are too lazy to look it over.

Did anyone read the fine print on the little 3inch screen on the Apple scanners when they signed? From what I gather about all the threads about being 2x charged I think not.

And is it fraud that there 3g map shows a strong signal at my house but I dont get any 3g at home EVER?

Of course ATT won't take you to court. They prefer sucking you dry through the data plan as opposed to taking $18 on a one time fee. It's the morality and the principle of the idea

I agree with you on this one. Lying in order to manipulate someone into giving you a better deal is dishonorable. For me it's even less of a moral issue than a practical one. People who live by their word gain a certain power. Their word carries strength amongst those who know them and in time, that strength is perceived by strangers too.

This is just as sad as ticket master charging you a convenience charge of like 40% of the ticket value, then they charge you to print you own tickets with you own paper and ink and then charge you an order fee for the privilege of placing an order with them...

Yeah, Ticketmaster is the worst, most evil corporation of them all. Talk about a 100% total ripoff. I've seen "convenience fees" as high as $13 on a $35 ticket, then another $2.50 to print them at home. Someone just needs to burn Ticketmaster headquarters to the ground....except they'd then probably charge a rebuilding fee. If they would just build the damn fee into the cost of the ticket, I would be none the wiser and wouldn't care. Then you have car rental companies...my current rental has $136 in FEES over 2 weeks, more than half the cost of the rental itself.

OK, back to the topic at hand...

1. That map is an estimation of coverage, not a guarantee.

2. You may not get coverage INSIDE your house. Try standing in your lawn, or your closest equivalent

the roof usually works for me... i dont know its worth a try :)

...although its not as convenient as you think

HAHA, I could see the new trend. A whole line of products for people to hang out on their roofs to use their iPhone 3G. Something like the iChair, with a recharge dock, and a station to help when your phone needs reset...The possibilities for bad marketing puns are endless

I called and asked about the charge...she wasn't biting so I said "is there anyway you can waive this" and she goes that they're not supposed to but she would this time. It's worth a shot.

Called AT&T, told them that I heard the Activation fee would be waived if we were on a corporate account. She said no problem and proceeded to give me the 8.99 text message deal as well when I asked. All I did was tell her the code, and she said that if it works, it works.

So far, my take on AT&T: Good customer service, Great product (iphone 3g), Bad coverage/drop calls.

Thanks OP.

I called because my text messaging plan was dropped for some reason and I had $30 in texting charges. They credited me account for that as well as the activation fee. A few days later I noticed that they still hadn't added texting so I called again. They credited me again for the used text messages and for the activation fee of another phone on my family plan

What is this $8.99 text message deal of which you speak?

If you have a FAN discount, you can get 1500 texts for $8.99 with the feature code TMS4. Getting it added can be quite the chore, though.

If you don't have a FAN discount, it won't work so don't even bother. You don't even talk to the same CSRs.

wow u would lie and spend time to get out of something that u agreed upon.. for $36... and ur buying over $200 phone?? how r u gonna afford monthly charge?

I highly doubt it has anything to do with them not being able to afford the $36 charge.

OK enough already,

First it's funny to see so many people so astonished that someone would want their $36 fee waived. But you read a activation fee removed thread. Which makes me thing you were ALOS looking for a way to get your fee removed. Then most people commenting on it already called and had it waived or MADE SURE THEIR COMPANY GOT IT WAIVED FOR THEM.

Second, I have to touch on this lying/fraud thing. Lying iand fraud is not the same, QUIT LOOKING IN THE DICTIONARY TO DEFINE LEGAL TERMS. For the person who said ask a lawyer if it is fraud, obviously does not know a lawyer. The law is not that open and shut. I call AT&T and lie and say I was double billed and they look and say no you were not, THEY WON'T GIVE ME THE CREDIT, or say they give me the credit then later see I was lying, THEY READD THE FEE, DUHHHHHH, then if I don't pay it my phone gets turned off and I have to pay the early termination fee. But lets give the ultimate scenario for you LEGAL BEGALS <----Sarcasm. ATT decides to sue me for "FRAUD" lol. They spend all this money on a lawsuit and I go in and say "Oh, I misread my bill, it's confusing and I had trouble understanding it." case dismissed!! Some of you are taking this lying thing WAYYYY TOOO far.

Third, yes I want my $36 back, not because I cannot afford it, but because I just signed a 2year contract in which I will pay you around $2400, so why am I getting charged a $36 activation fee. Also ATT has millions of customers in the same boat, not to mention all the corporate accounts. Voice and data with text on ATT will run you arond $100 monthly, lets be nice and multiply that by 100,000 customers on the same 2 year contract 100,000 x $2400 = $240,000,000. Now if they waived all of those activation fees, it wouldn't change that number cause it's a one time fee, they just would not get an extra $3,600,000. Bottom line I feel if i sign a contract for 2 years of your service, where you will profit off of me for 2years I should not even have to ask for the fee to be waived, it shouldn't be there.

Lastly, to top all of this off, if i am a new customer and I go to AT&T and sign a 2 year contract I am charged an activation fee, and I have the penalty over my head if I cancel early. But if I go in and say give me a GoPhone, the first thing they tell you is that there is NO ACTIVATION FEE. So AT&T slaps me in the face for being loyal and signing a contract and agreeing to a penalty by charging me an activation fee. But if i get a gophone and have no comitment then they waive the activation fee automatically. More reason my fee should be waived. Not to mention if all you have to do is call and ask for it to be waived and they do it, then the fee is just more BS, AT&T trying to nickle and dime you for all they can get, seeing if you will take a stand.

To conclude, if you lie to get your fee waived then yes morally you are bad, but it is not LEGALY fraud. Do I have a problem with it no, causethere are worse things you could do. The people an here screaming FRAUD, go to office parties and sleep with their co-workers, drool over the new admin assistant, and wack off to internet porn. But they stand up and yell FOUL when you say I did this to save $36. It's goofy, like cops saying they are stepping up patrols to catch people driving with no seatbelts, but child molesters and murders are constantly getting away.

As for me I had AT&T and they tried to charge me the activation fee, but then when I made the point about the GoPhone and me signing a contract, they waived it. The fee shouldn't be charged, it's a rip off, but if you are charged the fee, I would call and have them remove it, how ever necessary. Don't like it SUE ME......
