This is definitely a Verizon issue(not that you needed any more confirmation)...My wife noticed the difference on her phone since she recently switched from Verizon to AT&T. In the past she didn't have the "End and accept" option.

Now that is even more strange. I read the discussions to mean VZN iPhones couldn't do what I wanted because of the limitation of CMDA phone technology. But now it appears that VZN purposely deleted this function. Not nice VZN!

Now I am wondering if in fact they just changed the icon with the release. I cannot remember actually pressing the end current/answer new when we were testing. I had dialed a number then had him dial me so we could see the options. The double icons were there. Typically I rarely worry about back to back calls and just finish the one I am on. So cant 100% say that it in fact worked but the icon was the double one at least on beta 5. Now I have the end only just as you do. So perhaps they just fixed the icon to match the real functionality for CDMA phones in the release version of 7.1. That would certainly explain it.

That's what I'm thinking. That the icon changed but the functionality has always been the same.
Thanks again all for your input.

Never uploaded a pic so hope it's there. If it's not there, this is what I see.

On the left is a single red circle that says END CURRENT CALL. The right side says HOLD & ACCEPT. I want to END & ACCEPT which is not an option.

My phone says I am on 7.1. (11D167) I upgraded thru iTunes. Did not have sufficient space on the phone to upgrade OTA.

Clearly this is not what others have. Not very techy. Not sure how to restore. ???
Just paid a bit more attention to it when I got a call waiting call today on Verizon and had the same options. I chose the hold and accept option (and the previous caller I was on simply ended their call when I switched, so effectively it was like selecting end and accept in a sense).

I think next time I'll try the end current call option to see if the new call will simply start ringing as a new one after that so that I can answer it (which would effectively make it almost the same as end and accept, except you have to manually end and separately accept).

So are your icons the double as pictured or is it the single "end" one on the left side when another call is coming in? I had the double during the betas bit the single one now.

Just the single red end one on the bottom left for end current call. Basically looks like

Can't quite remember what it was like in betas for me as I don't really run into call waiting all that often and didn't pay that much attention at the time.

Tried this today on Verizon and it ended both calls. I didn't ask the person I didn't answer whether it sent her to voicemail or not. iPhone 4S if that makes any difference, caller was calling from a Verizon dumb phone.

From the 7.1 user guide:

Respond to a second call. You can:
• Ignore the call and send it to voicemail: Tap Ignore.
• Put the first call on hold and answer the new one: Tap Hold + Accept.
• End the first call and answer the new one: When using a GSM network, tap End + Accept. With a CDMA network, tap End and when the second call rings back, tap Accept, or drag the slider if the phone is locked.
With a call on hold, tap Swap to switch between calls or tap Merge Calls to talk with both parties at once. See Conference calls, below.

Note: With CDMA, you can’t switch between calls if the second call was outgoing, but you can merge the calls. You can’t merge calls if the second call was incoming. If you end the second call or the merged call, both calls are terminated.

Ah, RTFM option, we often forget to exercise it, and yet it often has the best answers.

I got a chance to create my own call waiting calls to play around with it all and the end current call will end the call you are on and allow the other one to come in so that you can answer it, but it does take a little time between ending the call and the other call to ring again (at least about 5 seconds or so). So in a sense it's like end and accept, just takes a bit longer and requires you to accept the incoming call once it comes through.

Ending the current call and waiting for the ringing to start again seems tedious for the person who is calling you. I assume all this time they are hearing a ring tone that is not answered by a live person or a message. Is that how your call worked D CM?
I think I might just stick with Hold & Accept. Either tell the first caller I'll be right back and tell caller no 2 I will call them back (in which case they hang up) or tell caller no 1 have to go and pick up call waiting. I assume caller no 1 will hang up. AT&Ts version is a lot less cumbersome.

Yeah they hear the ringing while you end and wait for it to ring and accept. In most cases hold and accept is probably the way to go where you basically finish that call and switch and the other party can just hangup themselves when you switch.

Also, comparing the iOS 6 screen to what we have now, I think Apple has really lost some key brilliant human interface design people and needs to get them back - pay them whatever they want and do whatever it takes because whoever is running that show now is clueless.

Oh my sweet Jesus!! Please... lol

Isn't it just fantastic when you come across people with intimate knowledge of Apple inner workings...... I am truly impressed....

I rarely get two calls at the same time but each time it happened , I messed up and hung up on both

I hadn't noticed the new icons (no double calls..) before reading this tread . So I tested it and find it terrific , much clearer and intuitive !

not sure how that could ever be confusing. you can also have your carrier increase the ring time before a call goes to voicemail. mine is set at the max 30 seconds

I have the same problem. I also no longer get the message option when a call comes in.

It seems that there isn't a problem here as much as differences how some carriers might work (CDMA vs GSM).

As for message option is that in reference to being able to reply with a message when someone calls? If so, have you checked Settings > Passcode > Reply with Message?
