I just remembered that a couple decades ago when I had a landline they came out with "Caller ID with name". Seeing the name in addition to the number was nice.

I use a call forwarding service for my business and it shows the name of who called on the website.

So why no name with my iPhone and AT&T??

Landlines are different and even then they dont show the name for every caller.
Its not just AT&T, no wireless carrier show names. Just the phone number.
They do on some occasions it seems with perhaps some of the more established/popular numbers, but not in general.

I am asking why? It was something that people liked and even paid more for at the beginning.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing the OP wants but here in Canada there is one carrier and its subsidiary (Rogers/Fido) that have an enhanced caller ID feature called Name Display. No other carrier in Canada has this feature.

It displays the callers' name (whatever name they registered with the telecoms) and it works for both business listings and personal lines. Of course it also displays the number (shows in the recent calls list in the iPhone's phone app).

The feature works great but they do typically charge extra for it (Fido for example has it as part of their $5 iPhone Value Pack which also includes VVM among other things).

Maybe in US certain carriers have this too (?).
