So I have an iPhone 6 and a few days ago, people I'm on the phone with say they can barely hear me and that my audio is up and down. However, when I put them on speaker phone they say I sound perfectly fine. Also, I hear a high pitched screech from time to time when I'm on the phone with somebody. That also started happening around the same time people started saying they can barely hear me. I checked to make sure the microphone was clear of any dirt or debris. Any ideas on what the problem is?

When I first got my iPhone 5, I had a nearly identical problem. A short while later there was an iOS update, and that put things to right.

Ergo, I suggest checking to ensure your iOS is current, and if necessary, doing full Restore. And it can't hurt, well, it shouldn't.

Please post back of your success (or not).

I tried restoring it, but the problem is still there. I'm beginning to think it's a hardware issue. Also I forgot to note, the phone was stuck in headphone mode just before the problem started, however I fixed that problem, but the previous problem remains. I may just tough it out and buy the new iPhone in September.

Is your phone in a case, and if so, does the problem persist when it's not in the case? I only ask because I have heard that some cases can cause such problems.

Also, in Settings/General/Accessibility>Hearing... You might try retoggling the "Phone Noise Cancellation" so that it remains enabled.
