Well, I wish you luck. I've been trying to go veg for over a year now, but it's hard because I love meat so much.

Thank you! Its gonna be a battle! But i think i have enough motivation to go through with it!

if thats how you feel i cant argue with that, but I do suggest going out, getting a cattle prod and touching yourself with it then reconsider your post about the "tasers" its not even that bad, and people like PETA make it a lot worse than it is. I raised pigs all through HS, and have been around prods and all the such so I know why they are used. I must agree with you on the chicken part but you can buy chickens in a lot of stores that are free range chickens, no cages. You sem to have done some research on the vegie side but try doing some research on the meat side as well, and not through biased sites like PETA and what not.

I am for sure open to all angles! Thank you for your input!

This isn't true. It's extremely hard to get ill from a vegetarian diet. Just eat a varied one as you would a omnivorous diet. Anaemia is the most colloquially well known side-effect and even then it's next to impossible if you're male.
Furthermore, how many vegetarians aren't sick, or how many people are sick who are NOT vegetarian? And how does one know that vegetarians aren't healthy strictly because of their diet? How many healthy vegetarians go unnoticed because they're not sick, or how many sick people are mistaken for vegetarians who aren't?

Really, that logic is a combination of the post hoc ergo propter hoc and tautology logical fallacies.

Honestly, I love vegan food and eat it quite often. However, I grew up in farm country and my family also hunted. I've killed several cows, chickens and rabbits with my own hands and eaten them. I see nothing wrong with eating meat or killing animals for food. What I do have a problem with is factory farming and such. I'm completely against that and make sure what I get is free-range.

Honestly, I think it's good to eat both diets. Don't do one extreme or the other. There are days when I want all vegan food, and others when I just want red meat. I think the key is balance, like everything else.

Ive NEVER killed an animal in my life! Its just the way i was raised. My mom always used to say she would kill a person before an animal. I guess i turned out the same!

Well sure. I think we're all products of our environment in some way. I was just always taught that you never kill anything, whether it be plant or animal, unless you plan to eat it. My parents would kick my butt if I ripped a plant out of the ground for no reason as well as kick my butt for killing crawfish for no reason.

BTW- I've also had many cats and dogs through my life. I like cats the most. Umm...not to eat, BTW. :)

Im the same man! I dont liter or anything like that! I always try to be the best person I can be.. It shocks people a lot of the time cause i get stereotyped as some "punk" because of all the tattoos. It blows peoples mind if i hold a door open at a store or something for them..

I have the same philosophy.

I was raised in an urban setting, and have never killed an animal in my life. I think that that way of thinking is just logical and ethical. It just makes sense.

Edit: just noticed that it looks like I only get to enjoy my 65832 for 4 more posts.....

Well of course. It's all perspective, I guess. But I always found I liked the "freaks" better. At least you know they're going to be nice people. ;) I'm a freak myself. We used to have an art gallery in Chicago called "Hook Torture". It was an S&M art gallery. I couldn't be further from that lifestyle, but I liked the people involved a lot. I went to all the parties there and had a great time watching people and making friends. One day, somebody asked me why I kept showing up, given that I had no tattoos or piercings. I was just like, " I just like to watch and I like the people. I'm not really into it for myself." Then they said, "Oh yes you are, you're a voyeur." So, I guess I am. ;)

If most people knew the way these animals were treated they would probably want to become a vegetarian as well. These animals do not ask to be put in these situations.

They didnt ask to be put in the situations just like you didnt ask to be born a human at the top of the food chain.... it happens. Jokes jokes.

A decent way to get off meat slowly is to overcook it and/or do not season it at all. Take the flavor and enjoyment out of it and eventually it starts losing its luster as well. Just make sure you are getting plenty of nuts and beans and such if you are used to the protein.

My diet is probably 99% protein! Its gonna be a ruff transition but i think i can do it!

A cow or pig is 100% usable, green product. Meat, bone, skin, cartilage, insides, liquid solid and gas waste, it can all be used in a clean friendly manner that is not cruel to the animal or the environment. Support responsible farming, methane harvesting, organic foods and fertilizers, and you'll see whats really up with the state of meat. PETA wants you to think all animals are raised in tight quarters on a factory farm, malnourished and so on. They're just feeding their ideals to people.

I eat meat, I wear leather, I fertilize with organic manure and bone and blood. When a piece of furniture is commissioned from my studio, and its ordered in leather, I gladly make it. Its the only responsible thing for me to do.

Without us to eat them, all these poor animals would become wildly overpopulated and starve in the fight to survive. As an animal lover, you can't want that.

If an animal is "100% usable" your justifying that as not cruel??
If there was a way to use ever part of a human im sure you would see a problem with people getting killed by the thousands.
Nothing against you at all but some people will never understand where i and many other people are coming from. Its just the way you were raised i guess.
You are entitled to your OPINION.

If you haven't read it already Shady there's a good book by the ethicist Peter Singer (and Jim Mason) called The Ethics of What We Eat. It's really interesting. They follow and compare the eating habits of an average omnivorous family, a vegetarian family, and a vegan family through the ethics of their purchase and the impacts of their choices on both the animals and the environment. I think it would be right up your alley :).

I value human life over an animal's, and feel offended when you're sure I'd endorse genocide. My people died because of that.

But where's the cruelty in eating meat? I make sure the meat I buy is raised in a freerange environment on an organic diet without growth hormone, and killed in a humane manner. Most of the meat I buy is raised locally, I make an effort to lessen my impact on the environment where I can. And do I understand where you're coming from? Yes, you've found yourself suddenly feeling too compassionate about animals' life than to eat one. Sudden change doesn't usually come from a revelation in one's self, its generally a reaction. You may have health issues pushing you to vegetarianism, but its more likely you have a love interest or merely someone to impress.

Thanks for assuming that I'd support mass human killing, that was real nice of you.

I think you'll find that Shady was just using "people" as a hyperbolic analogy to illustrate why you're justification for killing animals is a little off. He was in no way implying or assuming that you're OK with genocide.

I'm not a vegetarian (yet) but hope to become one eventually.

I don't think there's a right way to stop eating meat (cold turkey or gradually), you should do it the way it feels more confortable for you. If you don't like vegetables it's probably easier to stop eating meat gradually, and gradually adding the vegetables to your diet. You can "hide" some vegetables in your favorite foods so you start to get used to them, start experimenting with different ways to cook veggies and learn about seasoning.

You can also do veggie versions of some foods you like: veggie lasagna, chilli, pizza, tacos...

I don't want to come off as a PETA freak, but most people have a problem with the animal ending up dead, despite how it lived/died. The other problem is that it is possible for most people to survive healthily without meat.
Something I heard a lot of in school when we were talking about vegetarianism was "survival of the fittest," and how humans deserved to eat meat. America. Fit. :D

Your ridiculous! I dont know what motivates you to do things in life but for me its certainly not a "love intrest" or "trying to impress someone"..
Im doing this for myself. And for the animals.

Tell yourself what you want, but there is no humane way to kill animals!
