As I have come from Garmin, I noticed that the calorie burn for an outside walk was significantly lower using the Apple Watch vs. the Garmin. I had "heard" that it was due to the way the AW calculates calories using the phone, vs. the watch, so I conducted a short experiment on this thread at Post #33:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/workoutdoors-new-workout-features.2134687/page-2#post-26422987

So, I decided to check the calorie burn per mile on an inside walk, vs an outside walk, and there is significantly larger amount of calories burned on an inside walk, vs. an outside walk. For instance, a "mall walk" of 1.8 miles, with an average heart rate of 115bpm generated 337 active calories. That's approx 187.22 calories per mile. This, vs. the 76 cal/mile of an outdoor walk, with heart rate averaging in the low 120's, (121, and 124). I would like to know if anyone can explain this difference.

Was just wondering if I put Calorie burn per minute, and came up with somewhat similar results

Inside walk = 5.62 cal/min Average HR 115
Outside Walk = 3.08 Cal/Min Ave HR 124
Outside walk #2 2.72 Cal/Min Ave HR 121

Interesting.

It seems like your calories prefer to be outside, so when you're inside they want to escape so they can get outside, but when you're outside yourself, they're happy just staying inside your body... Haven't you ever even studied anatomy?

There's a whole range of running dynamics that aren't being shown in the test, yet are likely to be candidates included in the algorithms. Cadence, w/kg, pace etc. One of those metrics could be the cause of the large discrepancy. Possibly more than one.

LOL, I thought sure someone was gonna tell me I’m over analyzing this, but my OCD just kicks in and I go into “Monk” mode. (Monk is an old American TV series. I see a bit of him in myself LOL)

@oeagleo I'm gonna kick your OCD into overdrive. haha.

Here's what I see in regards to indoor walk vs outdoor walk.

At the same pace (about 17.5 min/mi) I will burn about:

  • 75 cal/mi on an outdoor walk while carrying my iPhone along.
  • 95 cal/mi on an indoor walk on the treadmill
  • 110-120 cal/mi on an outdoor walk without the iPhone.
I used to care about these differences, but I just gave up. On outdoor walks, I always carry my iPhone in order to get fewer calories (so I end up doing more activity to get my ring).

If I were you, I would just forget about how the calories are calculated and try to walk outdoors as much as possible, that way, you have to work harder to get your ring.
