Yes I have to agree with the

Calvin & Hobbes, Bloom County , and Far Side trinity. After these comics went out there was not much left on the comic pages. Every once in a while I pick up the funnies and can never find anything as engaging.

Other notable comics though not of the same caliber.
Old Heathcliff, Dennis the Menace and Marmaduke (I mean from the 50's and 60's basically in their respective first 4 or 5 years), the first 5 Garfield books, Dilbert, Baby blues (the first 2 books), Outland (I would group with Bloom County but the current Opus lost it's appeal)

I guess I need to look through my comics again.

Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons. :D

And for those of you who have given up on comics, I suggest you check out Liō. It runs daily, although my local paper only carries it on Sundays. It was the first syndicated comic I've ever seen that made a reference to The Clockwork Orange. :D

As a kid who grew up with ADD, worked for a while in an office and became a grad student, my top four comics of all time must be (in order of discovery)

1. Calvin & Hobbes
2. The Far Side
3. Dilbert
4. PHD

i was just reading my calvin and hobbes books today and it just makes me smile:)

They always make me feel better.

I bought the complete collection when it came out ~3 years ago, and whenever I'm feeling down or apprehensive, nothing can make me feel better quite like Calvin and Hobbes.

But then I guess my avatar gave away my fandom. :p
