From an external tray drive, iMac will not import mini disc home movies to edit. Is there a downloadable application to permit mini-disc import?

This is a MiniDisc:

Do you mean a Mini DVD?

If so, can't you connect the camcorder via USB to your Mac and download the footage via iMovie?
If not, any external CD/DVD drive will work to read data from a Mini CD or DVD, but the footage might be compressed down to MPEG-2, which is not easily imported into iMovie.

What exact camcorder do you use and what Mac OS X and iMovie version and Mac do you have?

I imagine OP means mini-DVD, and I think OP is using an external drive to look at them.

OP, what is the format of the movie file (what is the extension?

Copy it to your desktop (just one of them) and change the extension to .mpg. See if you can open it in Quicktime and play it. If so, you'll need to transcode it to .dv or .mp4 for iMovie to play nicely with it.

What version of iMovie and OS X are you running on?
