I daisy chained an old Panasonic camcorder to a Macbook Air (2020) as suggested; however, camera does not show up in iMovie or QuickTime. Is there a patch or different video software that can help?

Suggested by who? And more importantly, how - and what version of macOS are you using?

If you're trying to daisy-chain via Firewire to Thunderbolt, recall that Apple removed Firewire functionality from macOS Tahoe. You'll need to use a prior version of macOS to import any Firewire signal. That said, "camcorder" makes me think 1990s or early 2000s, in which case an analog video (RCA or S-Video) to USB should work just fine for the fidelity you're importing. Elgato and other companies still make/sell these adapters and accompanying software.
