Back in the beginning of March this year I purchased this product- the Square Jellyfish Spring Tripod Mount off of Amazon and think it's pretty awesome- especially for the price of $14 and change. I believe they also have tripods as well, but this is just the attachment piece that can be screwed on to any old tripod you may have or can get. I got a Targus 42" sectional tripod from Walmart for I believe $15.
If you're willing to spend around $30, these are pretty great together. I mainly have used them to get some longer exposures in the night sky. I am not even a recreational photographer; don't own any other equipment or cameras- just like using them for my iPhone and they certainly come in handy whenever you may be taking a portrait or family photo, etc.
Anyways, I haven't even used the Watch remote camera app with this gear to snap a shot, tho when I've played around with the Watch app, there definitely is some cool potential there to be used down the road.
I have a selfie stick that has a screw mount that attaches the phone holder to the actual selfie stick... i'm going to attach the iPhone mount to my tripod to take some group shots that aren't selfies without having to bring out my huge DSLR.
I usually carry this around with me so I just remove the bottom handle if I need to prop it on top of something when I'm trying to take group shots. Works great for videos.

Works good to hold iPhone. The iPhone cradle originally came with a selfie stick that I got as a gift, and being that I would never use the selfie stick, I use the iphone cradle sometimes. Attaches to any standard (3/8 I think?) camera mount. In this case my tripod.
Lol it's smaller than the iPhone 6 but pretty heavy so there's less shakiness when using it. I always carry a bag so I just toss it in there with the phone at times.
I don't think it's that hard to prop it up. I usually just take a tissue box and lean the phone against it. Yeah just get creative. Use a tv remote, napkin holder, paper towel roll, Oreo box.
I used a wine glass to lean the iPhone against on a table to take pics of us in a hotel garden. Some sort of stand would be nice, but it's good to just be creative and make it work.
